Following the 2018 World Cup in Russia, there was somewhat of a boom in the sales of the waistcoats, thanks to the use of the sleeveless upper-body garment by England manager Gareth Southgate, who against all odds, guided the team to a semi-final place in the tournament. His success makes him one of only three England managers to have achieved such a feat.

The 6 feet tall former England international, who played as a defender/midfielder, was also a reputable player in his time, making over 500 league appearances for his club sides and 57 appearances for his country.

Gareth Southgate Bio, How Old is He?

On the 3rd of September, 1970, in the Watford borough of Hertfordshire, England, Barbara, and Clive Southgate welcomed their son, Gareth Southgate. From a very young age, Southgate displayed a keen interest in sports, specifically football. He played the game while attending Pound Hill Junior School and then Hazelwick School in Crawley, West Sussex where he earned his O-Levels.

After leaving Hazelwick school, Southgate joined the football academy of Crystal Palace where he initially played as a right-back before he was moved to central midfield. He showed exemplary character through his work ethic and ability to lead his team, traits that ensured he was named the captain of all the youth teams he played for. Southgate progressed through all the different age groups he played for, however, due to his considerable lack of talent, he was not quite sure he was going to make it as a professional footballer. Because of this, Southgate spent some of his spare time at the Croydon Advertiser offices to gain work experience in case he eventually needed something else to fall back on.

Fortunately for him and Crystal Palace, Gareth Southgate was able to stick with football as he got promoted to the senior team at the age of 18, but, however, was only able to make his first team debut in the 1990-91 season. Southgate soon became captain of the side, playing for the Eagles from that time to 1995, making 152 appearances and guiding the club to the 1993–94 Football League First Division title before joining Aston Villa for a fee of £2.5 million.

Around this time, Southgate was able to get his first England international cap under coach Terry Venables. He went on to make the England squad that reached the semi-final of the UEFA Euro 1996 tournament where he missed the spot-kick that ensured his country was eliminated from the tournament. With his club side Aston Villa, Southgate made 191 appearances and won the 1995-96 League Cup trophy before moving to Middlesbrough for a fee of £6.5 million. With Boro, he won the 2004 League Cup trophy and notably helped them reach the 2006 UEFA Cup final before calling time on his career.

Managerial Career

Gareth Southgate was handed his first managerial job by Middlesbrough just as soon as he hung up his boots for the side. His appointment garnered controversy as he had not gotten the required coaching licenses to manage a first division club, however, because he had just retired from the game, he was allowed to take the position by the English Premier League as long as he was going to actively work towards getting the qualifications.

Southgate worked as manager of Middlesbrough from June 2006 to October 2009 when he was sacked. In the previous season (2008-09) leading up to his sacking, he guided Middlesbrough to a 19th place finish in the Premier League which relegated the club to the Championship. Southgate took a few years off before returning back to management, this time as the manager of the England under-21 team. He remained with the junior England side until September 2016 when he was promoted to the senior national team as first caretaker manager and later manager.

International Career

Gareth Southgate has debuted in England’s national team as a substitute in the match against Portugal. He played every minute as hosts England reached to sem-finals where they faced world champion Germany. He has also played in the FIFA world cup 1998 and the EURO cup 2000. He also played full 90 minutes in the year 2003 against Slovakia.

Gareth was capped for the 57th time for England and his first goal was against Luxembourg and his second was against South Africa. He has played over 41 games with Aston Villa out of 57 international matches.

Salary & Net worth

It is not clear how much money Gareth Southgate was paid for his job as coach of Middlesbrough or the England under-21 team, however, when he was appointed the full-time manager of the senior England national team in 2006, he put pen to paper on a four-year deal that was reportedly worth £1.8m per year.

In October 2018, after leading the Three Lions to the World Cup semi-finals, the English FA rewarded him with an improved deal that is said to be worth £3 million a year and would expire in 2022. Gareth’s net worth is $11 million as of 2022.

Family – Wife

In July 1997, at the St Nicholas Church in Worth, Crawley, Gareth Southgate exchanged vows with Alison Bird. The now Mrs. Southgate, who is said to be four years older than her husband, is a native of West Sussex. She met her man while she was working at a local clothing boutique in the 90s before their lives took a turn for the better. Together, the pair has two children; a daughter named Mia and a son named Flynn.
