Gennady Golovkin’s Early Life, Family and Parents

The great boxing champion was born as Gennady Gennadyevich Golovkin (GGG) in the city of Karaganda in Kazakhstan. Gennady’s parents were both from Russian and Korean origin making him have a mixed ethnicity. His father was a Russian coal miner while his mother is a Korean who worked as a laboratory assistant. He has two older brothers named Sergey and Vadim, and a twin brother named Max. Gennady started boxing as far back as when he was eight years old.

His elder brothers first took him and his twin to the boxing gym and encouraged them to fight in order to protect themselves. Later on, Sergey and Vadim joined the Soviet Army and died while in the service. Vadim’s death was reported in 1990 while Sergey was reported in 1994. However, issues regarding their death were never disclosed by the government or their family, they were both buried with empty caskets.

Amateur and Professional Career

Golovkin started his boxing training in a gym at Maikuduk, Karaganda, Kazakhstan and his first coach was Victor Dmitriev. He received intensive training and began his amateur career in 2000. In 2002, he won Olympic Solidarity Program scholarship and in 2003, he participated in the World Amateur Boxing Championships held in Bangkok, finishing as the Gold medalist. He also featured in the Asian Amateur Championships the next year winning the Gold medal. The games took place in Puerto Princesa, Philippines. He was part of the Kazakh Olympic team that went to 2004 Olympic Games in Athens, Greece, where the skilful boxer defeated US Andre Dirrell to qualify for the final and was beaten by Russia’s Gaydarbek Gaydarbekov leaving him at the second position with a silver medal.

Following his outstanding performances in the amateur competitions, Gennady Golovkin ended his amateur career in 2005. Later on, he signed a professional deal with a German company called UBP (Universum Box-Promotion) and made his professional debut in May 2006. He made significant progress, winning WBO inter-continental middleweight championship in Germany after beating the Brazilian boxer named John Anderson Carvalho. However, in 2010, following unresolved financial and contract issues he had with UBP, Golovkin had to cut ties with UBP ending his contract with them.

After a while, he was placed in an interim title fight with Milton Nunez who was the world’s number one at the time. Gennady defeated Milton becoming the world champion. He was upgraded to WBA (regular) champion after which the determined boxer took his career to the United States.

GGG made his debut in the United States in 2011 after battling with the US pro boxer named Lajuan Simon in New York City. He signed up with K2 Promotions and also received training from Abel Sanchez in Big Bear, California. Gennady won the IBO middleweight title in 2013, after beating Curtis Stevens. He successfully defended the IBO title for thirteen times making him the third all-rounder after Bernard Hopkins and Carlos Monzon who has 19 and 14 wins respectively.

The Kazakh star, usually called God of War has been outstanding throughout his career having thirty-seven wins out of thirty-eight fights and a draw. He has fought against champions and super champions including , Daniel Jacobs, Kell Brook, Dominic Wade, David Lemieux, Willie Monroe Jr., Martin Murray, and Rubio among others.

Gennady and his brother Max started boxing when they were eight years old after their older brother Vadim led them to the boxing gym. After the sudden demise of their elder brothers Vadim and Sergey, the twins witnessed a tougher life than they used to.

On their eighteenth birthday, their family couldn’t afford to sponsor the twins in the boxing career. As such, Max backed out for his brother Gennady who is a better boxer of the pair to continue his boxing career.

Golovkin has also disclosed in an interview that he is fighting for his family, his brother Max and his father who used to be his biggest fan when he was alive.

Talking about his personal life, boxing has taken the great champ Gennady Golovkin to many places in search of greener pasture. He’s been to nations like Germany and the US. It was in 2006 that the Kazakhstan native relocated to Stuttgart, Germany and later moved to California in the United States in 2014.

Apart from being a fierce fighter, GGG is also a loving husband and a father. He currently resides in Santa Monica, California with his wife Alina Golovkin and son named Vadim. Gennady named his son in loving memory of his elder brother Vadim who lost his life in 1994 while undergoing Russian government’s service in Siberia.

He brought his family to Santa Monica because that’s where his training camp, team, and other promotions are located. In his free time, Golovkin likes playing games with his son and spending time with his family. In addition to his native language, he can also speak three more languages including German, Russian, and English. His favourite food is beef.
