As an American news anchor, journalist and political commentator, George Stephanopoulos stormed the limelight when became the director of communication for the 1992 presidential campaign.

After Clinton was sworn in, he became White House’s communications director and remained one of the president’s most important aides until the time of his resignation. George’s professional life has been very diverse and most people would recognize him as ABC’s news frontman and anchor of the popular program Good Morning America and This Week.

George Stephanopoulos’ Biography

George was born in Massachusetts in the town of Fall River, on February 10, 1961, to parents of Greek descent. He went to Orange High School in Ohio, where he took up wrestling as a competitive sport. Upon graduation, he moved on to Columbia University in New York and finished summa cum laude with a degree in political science. He later attended Oxford University on a Rhodes Scholarship, where he bagged his master’s degree in theology.

Although his father wanted him to become a lawyer or a priest, and George nursed the idea of being either, he moved to Washington DC to works as an aide to Ed Feighan, an Ohio Congressman. He went on to serve as Feighan’s chief of staff before leaving to work on Michael Dukakis’ unsuccessful 1988 presidential campaign.

He worked as a floor assistant for Majority House Leader, Dick Gephardt before he went aboard the Clinton presidential campaign. Upon the inauguration of the new administration, George became a member of Clinton’s coterie of trusted advisers, on matters of policy and strategy with special focus on healthcare, affirmative action, and crime legislation.

Shortly after Clinton was reelected in 1996, George tendered his resignation stating that he was under a lot of stress, and suffering from fatigue and depression.

His next job saw him working as a professor of government at his Alma mater, Columbia University. At the same time, he tumbled into broadcasting, joining the American Broadcasting Company as a political analyst in 1996. He quickly grew to be the choice correspondent on some of ABC’s programmes such as World News Tonight and Good Morning America, of which he would eventually become the lead anchor. In 2002, he was promoted again and made the front liner for his own news show This Week With George Stephanopoulos. Three years later ABC made him its chief Washington correspondent.

Through hard work and dedication, George has become one of the biggest faces in American broadcasting. He has conducted interviews with various high profile individuals including , , , , and

George’s role at ABC has been quite spectacular, earning him three Emmys, three Murrows, two Cronkite, and one Dupont award.

In 1999, he published All Too Human: A Political Education, a book about his time spent working with the Clinton campaign and administration during the first term. The book peaked at No. 1 New York Times bestsellers list. He chronicled his battle with depression and stress due to pressures of the job. According to George, the job was so demanding that he had to run to a therapist for help.

The reputed newsman also had a brief stint as an actor. He played himself in The War Room, a documentary which delved behind-the-scenes of the Clinton Campaign of 1992. The documentary was nominated for an Academy Award.

George met his wife Ali Wentworth, an actress, writer and comedienne through a blind date set up by her best friend. Ali was convinced she wasn’t going to like him because she wasn’t interested in dating anyone in politics. But somehow, they ended up talking for hours, fell in love in a few days, and got engaged barely two months later.

 

The happy couple has two daughters, Elliot and Harper. George and Ali always make sure they go to bed at the same time every night even if they are thousands of miles away from each other. Despite being married for over 15 years, the couple swears their hearts skip a beat when the other person walks through the door.
