Georges St Pierre is a Canadian-born professional mixed martial artist who is well-known for his long illustrious stint with the Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC). He turned pro in the early 2000s and over the years, he has successfully established himself as one of the most formidable fighters in the history of MMA.

St-Pierre is a two-division champion having won both the Welterweight and the Middleweight Championship titles. He initially retired from the sport in December 2013 as the reigning Welterweight Champion but after a 4-year hiatus, he returned to the sport and was able to clinch the Middleweight title in November 2017. His reign as the Middleweight Champion was brought to end on December 7, 2017, when he relinquished the title owing to some health challenges.

Georges St Pierre – Biography, Age

The talented mixed martial artist was named Georges St-Pierre at birth on May 19, 1981, in Saint-Isidore, Québec, Canada. His parents are Roland and Pauline St-Pierre. Growing up, he was involved in diverse sporting activities including hockey, skating and karate. At age 16, he took up other combat sports including wrestling, Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, and boxing. He equally had to do several odd jobs to support himself before he eventually became a professional mixed martial artist at age 21.

St-Pierre is known to have turned pro in 2002, however, his earlier years were poorly documented. He marked his UFC debut in January 2004 at the UFC 46 event in which he defeated top-ranked MMA star Karo Parisyan. After recording a second victory at UFC 48, St-Pierre got his first shot at the UFC Welterweight Championship when he faced Matt Hughes at UFC 50 in October 2004. However, he was defeated by Hughes via armbar submission which marked his first loss in the UFC. St-Pierre swiftly returned to his winning ways as he recorded 4 straight wins in his subsequent bouts.

The budding artist got another shot at the UFC Welterweight Championship at the UFC 63 event held in September 2006. Sadly, he was unable to feature in the match owing to a groin injury and thus he was replaced by B.J. Penn. The following month, he got a third shot at the title when he faced Matt Hughes at the UFC 65 event. St-Pierre won the fight in the second round via technical knockout which marked the beginning of his first stint as the UFC Welterweight Champion. His reign came to an end when he lost the title to Matt Serra in April 2007 at the UFC 69 event.

In April 2008, Georges St-Pierre was able to reclaim the Welterweight title at the UFC 83 event held in Québec, Canada. This marked the beginning of his record 2,064-day reign as the UFC Welterweight champion. He successfully defended the title 9 times between 2008 and 2013. He ultimately vacated the title in December 2013 when he temporarily retired from professional mixed martial arts.

After a long hiatus, Georges St-Pierre re-signed with the UFC in February 2017 and this time, he opted to compete in the Middleweight Division. In his first match after returning to the UFC, St-Pierre was pitched opposite then-Middleweight champion at the UFC 217 event held on November 4, 2017. He defeated Bisping in the third round via technical submission to become the new UFC Middleweight Champion. He also became the 4th MMA star to be crowned champion in multiple weight divisions in the history of the UFC. However, his reign as UFC Middleweight Champion was rather shortlived. St-Pierre vacated the Middleweight title on December 7, 2017, after he got diagnosed with ulcerative colitis.

Georges St Pierre is 5 feet 11 inches (180 cm) in height. Before vying for the middleweight title in November 2017, the MMA star had to up his body mass from the welterweight limit of 170 pounds up to the middleweight limit of 185 pounds. However, this weight-gain program ultimately proved to be detrimental to his health as it left him with ulcerative colitis. The two-time champion hopes to return to his natural weight and also to begin competing in the welterweight division.
