She was born as the second child of Diego Claudia and has one sibling – elder sister, Dalma Nerea Maradona. While Giannina was born five years after her parents became husband and wife, her sister came two years before her.

Giannina’s parents got to know each other after their families became neighbours in 1976. The exact time they started dating is not known but the couple dated for a long time before exchanging vows in 1984. They had two children together and after Giannina’s birth, the family became turbulent. According to reports at the time, their problems stemmed from Diego’s issues with drug abuse, as well as his incessant extra-marital affairs which led to the birth of his other children.
