Torres didn’t become a baseball superstar all at once, it has been a gradual process traced back to his formative years when his passion for the game was very much obvious. He was known to be versatile enough to play competently in many positions ranging from being a catcher to center field, shortstop, and as a pitcher.

Gleyber Torres’s Bio

The Venezuelan professional baseball player was born as Gleyber David Torres Castro in Caracas, Venezuela on the 13th day of December 1996. While we haven’t been able to substantiate the information we gathered about his family background and educational qualification, it is common knowledge that the second baseman for the New York Yankees started working towards being a professional baseballer in the early days of his life.

His efforts paid off in 2013 when he inked a deal as an international free agent with the Chicago Cubs. The next year saw him make his professional debut with the Arizona Cubs of the Rookie-level Arizona League, he played for a while with the team and was eventually promoted to join the Boise Hawks of the Class A-Short Season Northwest League.

The baseball star started the 2015 season with the South Bend Cubs of the Class A Midwest League, he soon ascended to the Myrtle Beach Pelicans of the Class A-Advanced Carolina League in September on promotion. The Venezuelan baseball player stayed with the Myrtle Beach Pelicans until he was traded to the Yankees for a relief pitcher Aroldis Chapman along with Rashad Crawford, Adam Warren, and Billy McKinney on 25th July 2016.

Thus, his career with the Yankees started with him playing in the team of the Tampa Yankees of the Class A-Advanced Florida State League. By the end of that season, Torres got assigned to the Scottsdale Scorpions of the Arizona Fall League (AFL). This bloke made a name with the Scorpions as the AFL Most Valuable Player. At this time, he was just 19 and as such, was also named the League’s youngest player. That’s not all; Gleyber Torres was equally honored as the youngest baseballer in history to ever win AFL Most Valuable Player. Consequently, Baseball America ranked him as the Yankees top prospect after the 2016 season.

On entering the 2017 season which he started with the Trenton Thunders of the Class AA Eastern League, Baseball America again listed him as the 5th best prospect in baseball. This inspired his promotion to the Scranton/Wilkes-Barre RailRiders of the Class AAA International League. Sadly, he soon sustained an injury which required an ulnar collateral ligament reconstruction; this kept him away from games for the rest of 2017.

But then, Gleyber Torres wouldn’t crawl away into oblivion. He came back with full force in 2018 and, it has been largely agreed that the season is his big break. Among other things, singled him out as the best shortstop prospect. It was only natural for the Yankees to promote Torres to the major leagues. The team did so sometime in April and the Venezuelan baseballer has remained relevant.
