Call her The Godmother, the Black Widow, La Madrina, the Cocaine Godmother, or even the Queen of Narco-Trafficking and all who knew about Griselda Blanco, the woman who dealt in drugs with the Medellín Cartel, will nod in agreement that from the 1980s through the 2000s, Griselda proved herself as deserving of those names in the underworld cocaine drug trade of that era in Colombia and Miami.

As always, hardly will you find any drug lord who was (or is) not involved in murders, and Blanco was no exception. Reports have it that she was responsible for the murder of about 200 persons in the course of carrying out her drug-related dealings. However, over time, she was sent to meet her maker, in the same manner she stifled the life out of others.

Griselda is no more, but her tales still makes the ears of anyone that hears it to tingle. Here, we are going to put together most of the major events that marked her life while she lived, her finance as well as tell you about her family members and what became of them.

Griselda Blanco’s Bio

The Cocaine Godmother whose full name is Griselda Blanco Restrepo was born on the 15th of February 1943 in Santa Marta, Colombia. She had as her parents Fernando Blanco (father) and Ana Lucía Restrepo (mother). When she was about 3 years old, her mother relocated to Medellin with her and it didn’t take long before she got involved with criminal activities. Griselda despite being a child became a pickpocket, kidnapper and even shot a child in her neighborhood. To add to her woes, her mother’s boyfriend was also sexually abusing her and this led her to flee their house when she was 16 years old.

Out in the streets, there was no turning back for Griselda Blanco as she only got worse. She got married to Carlos Trujillo, a fellow criminal while still a teenager with whom she had three kids before they divorced. In the early 70s, she began a relationship with Alberto Bravo – a drug trafficker who she later married. With the help of her second husband, Griselda got involved in the cocaine trade and got very good at it. In the mid-70s, she immigrated to the United States of America with her husband and settled in Queens, New York.

They set up a cocaine business in Queens which soon began to thrive. In April 1975, Griselda alongside 30 others was indicted on drug charges. However, she fled to Colombia to avoid arrest but returned to the US again in the late 70s. This time around, she settled in Miami which at the time was overwhelmed with drug-related crimes. The crime-ridden atmosphere in Miami enabled Griselda Blanco to not only gain a foothold in the cocaine trade at the time but in addition, she got involved in the drug violence dubbed Cocaine Cowboy Wars or Miami Drug War.

As her dominance grew, so did her enemies in the drug trade. For this reason, several attempts were made to assassinate Griselda but they all came to naught as she quickly escaped to California. The law caught up with her in the Bear Flag State for which reason she was sentenced to more than 10 years in jail. While in prison, the Queen of Narco-Trafficking kept running her cocaine business with the help of one of her sons – Michael Blanco. In 2004, Griselda Blanco became a free woman and got deported to Medellín, Colombia.

Then, on the 3rd of September 2012, she was murdered by a gunman who pulled up at the Cardiso butcher shop where she had gone to buy meat. The gunman alighted from his motorcycle, shot La Madrina twice on her head before disappearing into the streets on his motorbike. Thus, the dreaded Black Widow was no more at age 69.

Family: Husband, Sons, Daughter

Griselda Blanco as previously mentioned was first married to Carlos Trujillo (1960 – 1969). The couple bore three sons named Dixon, Uber, and Osvaldo. All three of Griselda’s sons were killed in Colombia after serving prison sentences and deportation from Colombia. Reports have it that she later had Carlos, her first husband, assassinated.

Alberto Bravo who was Griselda’s business partner at the time later became her husband (1970 – 1975). Following a disagreement, the duo had in 1975 while in a Bogotá nightclub parking lot about some millions missing from their cartel, the duo pulled weapons at each other which resulted to a gun battle. Alberto and six bodyguards laid dead afterward while Griselda sustained only but a minor gunshot wound on her stomach.

Blanco moved on with her life and had another child with Darío Sepúlveda, a son named Michael Corleone Blanco. Dario however separated from Griselda in 1983 and later kidnapped Michael when he had a disagreement with the Cocaine Godmother on who should have custody of their child. It turned out his kidnapping of his own son was a very wrong thing to do as Griselda Blanco paid to have Sepúlveda assassinated in Colombia. Thus all three of her husbands died by her own hands.

Her youngest son Michael Corleone Blanco, however, revealed that Griselda later became a born again Christian and got into a personal relationship with a certain Anna Cruz whom Michael revealed she loved as a daughter. However, when Anna learned of her past and who she truly was, she cut ties with the Queen of Narco-Trafficking. Who wouldn’t?

While she lived and at the peak of her cocaine business, Griselda Blanco’s cocaine distribution network in the United States of America was raking in as much as $80 million monthly. This of course came at a great cost for which she ultimately paid the price. The Cocaine Godmother reportedly amassed $2 billion as her net worth while she lived.
