Vanaken is a Belgian attacking midfielder who plays for Club Brugge in the Belgian First Division A and for the national team of Belgium. The midfielder began his career with Lommel United’s youth team before moving in 2002 to join the PSV Eindhoven academy after the former went bankrupt. In 2008, he returned to a revitalized Lommel, where he made his senior debut in the Belgian Second Division in 2010. After a succession of notable performances for Lommel, he grabbed the attention of a number of top-flight clubs and joined Lokeren in 2013.

On July 28, 2013, he made his top-flight debut for Lokeren, scoring two goals in a 3–2 win over defending champions Anderlecht. In May 2015, Lokeren announced that it had struck an agreement with Club Brugge for Vanaken’s transfer, with the player signing a five-year contract subject to a physical. His first season at Club Brugge was marked by a start in the starting lineup, where he played a key role in the club’s 14th league title. Vanaken scored 21 goals and added 21 assists in 2018, helping his team win their 15th league title and the Belgian Supercup. Vanaken won the Belgian Golden Shoe award on January 16, 2019, after winning the Belgian Professional Footballer of the Year title in May 2018.

On August 9, 2019, Vanaken signed a new contract with Brugge that would keep him at the club until 2024. Vanaken scored the equalizing goal in Brugge’s Champions League home match against Real Madrid on 11 December 2019, however, Brugge would eventually lose 1–3 and be relegated to the UEFA Europa League Round of 32.

Vanaken scored twice in a 3–3 draw with Anderlecht on May 20, 2021, as Brugge won the Belgian First Division A title for the fourth time in six years and the 17th time overall. It was the first time Club Brugge had been declared champions in Anderlecht’s stadium since 1973, and the first time Brugge had won back-to-back league titles since 1976–77 and 1977–78.

Vanaken made his international debut for Belgium on September 7, 2018, in a 4–0 victory against Scotland at Hampden Park, replacing Eden Hazard. On March 30, 2021, he scored his first two goals for Belgium in an 8–0 win over Belarus in qualifying for the 2022 FIFA World Cup. Vanaken, along with club teammate Simon Mignole, was one of two Belgian players named for the final 26-man roster for the UEFA Euro 2020 on May 17, 2021.
