Career Beginnings

Hector Herrera has played soccer for a couple of clubs around the world. He can be described as a box to box midfielder because of his style of play. Predominantly used in the defensive midfield position, Herrera has made it his stock in trade to anticipate and nullify the opposition attacking threat. He has a knack for shooting at the opposition goal from long range. He is also known for his great strength tough tackling, and ability to distribute the ball up the field masterfully.

Herrera started his soccer career in 2007, playing in the obscurity of the Second Division for a side called Arroceros de Cuautla, a team based in the central state of Morelos. That was where he was noticed by  C.F. Pachuca, who contracted him and then sent him on a loan spell to a minor club Tampico Madero also known by the nickname “los Jaibos” which means the Crabs in the Gulf state of Tamaulipas. He played for a year there before his team was unfortunately expelled from the league for non-payment of dues. This dealt a heavy blow on the club as they had already qualified to play for the title. With that, he returned to Pachuca.

Pachuca and F.C. Porto

His first professional club is C.F. Pachuca, a professional Liga MX club that is based in Pachuca in Mexico. He started playing in the youth teams setup before he eventually got promoted to their senior team. Herrera played his first game (debut) with the Pachuca first team on July 21, 2010, when he was only 19 years old. It was a game against Chivas USA which they (Pachuca) lost by a slim margin – a lone goal.

After 52 appearances (and two goals) for C.F. Pachuca in his two seasons with the Liga MX club, Portuguese soccer powerhouse, F.C. Porto came calling. In June 2013, Herrera moved to join F.C. Porto in a fee in the region of €8 million. He scored three league goals in 17 appearances for Porto in his debut season while bagging 33 appearances in all competitions for the Portuguese side.

He won the club’s “Player of the Year” award for the 2014-15 season and has also won the Portuguese league award with the club. Currently still playing for Porto, his goals tally so far has clocked double figures (from a defensive midfield position) in over 100 appearances for the club. His efforts have seen him don the captain’s armband temporarily on several occasions before being named permanent club captain in 2015.

Mexico National Team Career

Herrera began his national team career with the U23 side. He was called up to join the rest of the squad for the qualifying rounds of the CONCACAF zone for the 2012 Olympics and the subsequent event in 2012 by the then U23 coach, Luis Fernando. His team won the soccer gold in the tournament by defeating Brazil 2-1 in the final to claim the gold medal. He was voted the most outstanding player of the Toulon Tournament as he was part of the national team B side that won the competition in the same year (2012).

On the back of his success with the Mexico U23 team, Hector Herrera was called up to the senior national team in 2012. He has participated in the 2013 FIFA Confederations Cup, the 2014 FIFA World Cup and the Copa América Centenario with the national team and has scored three goals so far. He has been included in the team to fly the nation’s colors in Russia for the 2018 FIFA World Cup after a fruitful 2017-18 season with his club, F.C. Porto.

Other Facts About Hector Herrera

Hector Herrera’s education background is not known. The only thing known is that he only finished middle school.

Herera is the captain of his club side, F.C. Porto and the captain of the Mexico national team otherwise known as El Tri.

His move to F.C. Porto from C.F. Pachuca was masterminded by Nicholas “Nicky” Blair, the son of the former Prime Minister of Britain, Tony Blair. Nicky spotted Herrera during Mexico’s run to the Gold medal in the London Olympics in 2012 and followed him up to Pachuca where he initiated the multi-million dollar move.

His transfer at the time from C.F. Pachuca to F.C. Porto was the most expensive for a Mexican as Porto had to splash out the sum of $10.5 million (€8 million) to get their man. It was more expensive than the $9.5 million Manchester United paid for also called “Chicharito” in 2010.

Hector Herrera has been compared to Argentina and Boca Juniors legend, Juan Román Riquelme for his class and quiet demeanor on the field of play, as well as his tactfulness, grace, and agility.

Herrera set an unwanted record in the UEFA Champions League for the quickest dismissal via two yellow cards. In a UCL match against Russian side, Zenit Saint Petersburg on October 22, 2013, he was sent off in the sixth minute.

Earlier on in his soccer career, his wife, Shantal Mato, who was pregnant at the time, begged him to forget about soccer and find something else to do.
