There are only a few athletes in the world right now who can be described with the terms great and consistent. A perfect example of a golfer that fits that description is Henrik Stenson.
Although he is yet to achieve the feat of being called world number one, there is a side of Stenson’s game that makes him stand out from the rest. Let’s take some time to take a look at the life of the Swedish professional golfer.
Henrik Stenson Biography
Henrik Olof Stenson was born on April 5, 1976. He is from Gothenburg, Sweden. Henrik grew up in southern Sweden, with his father, Ingemar, his mother, Mona, and his younger sister, Ulrika.
He joined the European Tour in 2001 and PGA in 2007. He has 20 professional wins to his name: 6 PGA Tours, 11 European Tours, 1 Asian Tour and 1 sunshine Tour. He represented Sweden at the 2016 summer Olympics games held in Rio de Janeiro. He won a silver medal in that competition and was the first golfer to win both U.S PGA Tour’s FedEx Cup and European Tour’s Race to Dubai in the same season. He achieved these feats in 2013.
1999 was the year the natural left-hander became a professional golf player. In the year 2000, he topped Europe second tier golf tour ranking, the challenge tour. A year after he joined the big league, he claimed his first European Tour victory, winning the Benson and Hedges international open.
He finished within top ten of the European order of merit between 2005 to 2008.
His victory over Geoff Ogilvy in the final of the WGC-Accenture match championship took him to the two of the European order of merit and 5th in world rankings, the highest a male Swede golfer has ever achieved. He made sure Europe won the Ryder Cup for a third consecutive time when he holed the winning putt to beat Vaughn Taylor 4 and 3, in 2016, and that was his debut in the competition.
Stenson reached a career-high in 2014, he ranked as world number two, only behind number one, Adam Scott. He also achieved his career-best finish at both the Masters (T14); the U.S. Open (T4) and the PGA Championship (T3).
2015 wasn’t the best of year for the Swede. He could only settle for several runner-up positions but not a single championship win.
In 2017, Stenson achieved yet another incredible feat by breaking Wyndham championship aggregate scoring record (258) also defeating Ollie Schniederjans by a single stroke.
