Before May 2016, Liberte Chan was just an accomplished meteorologist working on a major news network. This changed after she became embroiled in an on-air incident involving her choice of outfit. The American media personality received equal amounts of support and bashing. The controversy also sparked an international conversation about workplace sexism. So, what transpired and what has Chan been up to ever since then? All these and more are unveiled below.
Liberte Chan’s Early Life and Education
Liberte Chan was born on the 16th of July 1980 in Los Angeles, California. Her father is Russian-American while her mother is Chinese. The TV personality has two beloved older brothers.
Chan grew up in L.A. and aspired to be a journalist when she was in her teens. There were, however, two factors militating against this vision. First was the fact that she was naturally shy and hated speaking in public. Second, and even more pressing, was her ethnicity.
There were not a lot of Asians and half-Asians in the media but the young girl refused to give up. On completing her diploma at Marlborough School for Girls, Chan headed to the University of Massachusetts and obtained a B.A. in journalism in 2001. She subsequently obtained other qualifications: a Certificate in Meteorology, Masters in Public Health, and Degree in Broadcast Journalism; all in a bid to achieve her dreams.
The Journey of Her Journalism Career
Liberte Chan commenced her career as a writer for the news show on KTLA in 2003. She worked there for three years before joining a Santa Barbara county station, KCOY/KKFX, as a general assignment reporter.
Chan spent two successful years in Santa Barbara during which she received a commendation from the California state governor for a series of brilliant pieces that she did about the county’s probation department. Following this exploits, Chan unsurprisingly received an offer to work as a morning news anchor at KMIR-TV, Palm Springs.
She immediately snapped it up and spent a total of two years at the station. She subsequently re-joined KTLA as a reporter in August 2010. Since then, Chan has worked her way up to the position of a meteorologist. She has also established herself as one of the most beloved TV figures on the West Coast.
Details of The Liberte Chan Sweatergate Controversy
On the 16th of May 2016, Chan got to work to deliver her regular weather forecasts. She initially chose a particular dress but realized that the color clashed with the screens. She, therefore, settled for a beaded, sleeveless, black dress and went on air. While delivering her forecasts, a male colleague handed her a cardigan and asked her to cover up as they were getting lots of negative emails from viewers.
His action sparked a backlash as many accused him and the network of sexism. Chan initially came out to defend her colleague, maintaining that they joked around a lot. She later disclosed that she had received lots of positive, as well as negative emails. While some people body-shamed her, others encouraged her to stay strong as the fight for gender equality continues.
What Does She Do Now?
Liberte Chan has since moved on from Sweatergate. She still works at KTLA and expertly delivers the forecasts each morning. The lady also started a lifestyle blog known as Life of Liberte.
The blog is aimed at getting people to look and feel their best whilst navigating through a busy life. It features fashion and beauty tips, decoration ideas, healthy meals, snack options, book reviews, and inspirational quotes.
Who Is The Husband of Liberte Chan?
Liberte Chan was previously married to Brian Chase, an actor. Chase is a native of Washington D.C and studied at NYU’s Tisch School of the Arts. He also honed his acting skills at the Steller Adler Conservatory. Chase has featured in several theatrical productions. He has also featured in a handful of films and TV series including Pivot, Janitors, and EMT.
There are no specific details on how Chan and Chase commenced their romance. Nonetheless, it is known that they tied the knot in Beverly Hills in 2012. The couple stayed married for some years but subsequently called it quits. Since then, Chase has largely flown under the radar. Chan, on the other hand, has found love again with fitness expert, Brett Hoebel.
The couple shares a mutual love for yoga and often post pictures of their workout sessions. Even, they co-founded a fitness company known as Sweat and Soul.
