The Los Angeles born emcee does more than just rhyme with the mic. He is also a record producer, director, and actor. Hopsin has released several mainstream and independent projects since 2003.

At one time he notably signed deals with Ruthless Records and Warner Bros. Records. The Gazing at the Moonlight and Pound Syndrome rapper signature look is using white contact lenses in his music videos, stage performances, and even interviews. He says that he does it to kind of distinguish himself from the “African American rapper” stereotype.

Hopsin Bio – Early Life and Career Begining

Hopsin was born and raised in Panorama City, a majorly Hispanic area in Los Angeles. He was born Marcus Jamal Hopson on July 18, 1985. The avid skateboarder was placed in special ed classes while at James Monroe High School.

In 2001, at the age of 16, Marcus started to try his hands at rapping, thanks to inspiration from Eminem. He finally decided to really make something of it and released his first project Emurge locally in 2003. In 2004, Hopsin was incarcerated for vandalizing his high school property; he had dropped out of school earlier that year. The vandalism that was supposed to be a school prank landed him in the Los Angeles County Jail for a year. His friends who had been arrested together with him were put on a $20,000 bail.

When he got out in 2005, he decided to face his music and craft seriously. He purchased a microphone and a music production software and started grinding out his own music.

Hopsin began working on his debut album Gazing at the Moonlight in 2004, but it was released in 2009, under Ruthless Records, a label he had signed to in 2007. Due to underwhelming financial compensation, lack of artist support and collaboration and lack of promotion on the label’s part, Hopsin sought to leave.

It was during this time that he formed his independent label, Funk Volume with his friend, Damien Ritter. He later signed Ritter’s brother, SwiZz onto the label as its first artist. They collaborated on a label promotional project titled HayWire. However, they couldn’t sell it because Hopsin was still contracted to Ruthless Records at the time. They had to release it for free on DatPiff. The mixtape has since being certified Gold for surpassing 100,000 downloads on the platform. They would later make a few bucks when it was made available for purchase on Amazon.com and iTunes.

Hopsin released a few singles prior to the release of his second album. Most notable was the single Sag My Pants, in which he threw jabs at the owner of Ruthless Records, Tomica Wright, and rappers like Drake, Soulja Boy, Rick Ross, Lil Wayne and Lupe Fiasco. The song and its accompanying video went viral on YouTube garnering millions of views. The album was released on November 19, 2010. He toured the album for two months from March 2011.

In the same year following his tour, Hopsin continued dissing tirade, this time focusing on “Tyler, the Creator” of Odd Future. He also became a character in Jump Shot Media’s battle rap game, “Battle Rap Stars”.

In 2012, Hopsin made it onto XXL’s “Top 10 Freshmen List” with other notables like French Montana, Iggy Azalea, and Macklemore. He also featured on the music video for Tech N9ne’s “Am I A Psycho?”. More to that, he made a showing on a BET Cypher with Mystikal, Mac Miller, and Schoolboy Q, at the 2012 Hip Hop Awards.

Struggle with Religion and Further Career Exploits

In July 2012, Hopsin released the video for Ill Mind of Hopsin 5. He was worried at first that his fans may not relate to it because of the content of the song. He had started to build a relationship with God after the previous instalment of the series and this track showed it. However, the song went on to become Hopsin’s most viewed video on YouTube till date with over 89 million views.

On November 26, 2013, the rapper put out his third album Knock Madness. It debuted at No. 76 on the Billboard 200. On this project, he worked with emcees such as Tech N9ne, SwiZz, and Dizzy Wright. He and his Funk Volume family went on an international tour for the album in the fall of 2012. 2013 also saw the Funk Volume family release a video for their song Funk Volume 2013. They performed the song at the Paid Dues festival in San Bernardino in the same year.

Hopsin’s next album, Pound Syndrome was released on July 24, 2015. Records earlier in the month helped the album hit No. 17 on the Billboard 200 with first week sales of 17,000 units. A month prior to the release, his singles Sag My Pants and Ill Mind of Hopsin 5 received gold certification from the RIAA.

Hopsin left Funk Volume in March 2016, after several business and financial disagreements with his co-founder Damien Ritter. He founded another independent label Undercover Prodigy. In October 2017, he penned a distribution deal with 300 Entertainment and released his fifth album No Shame a month later.

The rapper’s acting career includes appearing as an extra in movies and Disney Channel TV shows. These include Gilmore Girls, Even Stevens, John Tucker Must Die and more. He also appeared as a rapper in the 2009 movie Fame and also in the second season of Murder in The First, a TV drama series in 2015.

Hopsin’s Girlfriend, Baby Mama and Son

Hopsin does not seem to have had a litany of relationships before the very public one he had with Alyce Madden. The Australian lady is a makeup artist from Sydney in New South Wales, Australia. Hopsin was apparently very committed to her in the past. He even announced one time in 2014 that he would be pausing music and moving to Australia to spend some time with her.

Somewhere along the line, they had a son. But as their relationship had deteriorated, Alyce fought to keep him away from their son. She even put out a restraining order on him that banned him from ever entering Australia. Hopsin has repeatedly poured out his anguish and frustration on his social media and in his music like he did in Ill Mind of Hopsin 9.
