The multi-hyphenate entertainer was born in El Centro, California, in the United States on the 20th day of May 1946. She was born to John Sarkisian (father) and Georgia Holt (mother). Holt was a part-time actress and model while her husband was an Armenian-American truck driver famed for his gambling and drug problems.
Cher’s parents divorced ten months after she was born. This caused her mother to tie the knot the second time with John Southall. Holt’s marital relationship with actor Southall produced a daughter called Georganne Southall, who became Cher’s half-sister. Holt later divorced her husband and got married again in 1961 to Gilbert LaPiere, a bank manager. He would adopt and raise Cher and Georganne as his own daughters.
She studied at Montclair College Preparatory School and later Fresno High School.

Now, a transgender man, his father, Sonny Bono, a popular producer, actor, politician, singer-songwriter, musician, and Cher’s first husband. He rose to an immense popularity after partnering with his wife and establishing the music group Sonny & Cher.
They initially started out as Caesar and Cleo and later changed to Sonny & Cher, after which they recorded huge success with the song ‘I Got You Babe’. The reason Bono started performing with his wife was that Cher suffered from stage fright during her budding years.
Sonny and Cher met in November 1962 while the former was working for renowned record producer, Phil Spector. She became his housekeeper, then close friend, and then lover. They eventually got married on October 27, 1964, had a marital crisis in 1972 which led Sonny to file for separation in February 1974. The couple’s divorce papers were eventually finalized on the 26th of June, 1975. Sonny Bono died from a skiing accident in 1998.
Cher’s second son, Elijah Blue Allman, came from her relationship with her second husband Gregg Allman. The singer tied the knot with Allman just four days after her divorce from Sonny became official. However, her marriage to the rock icon which took place on June 30, 1975, ended after four years of stormy marital relationship. Allman, who doubles as the co-founder of The Allman Brothers Band had alcohol and heroin problems and Cher wasn’t comfortable with it at all.
Their son, Elijah Blue, who was born in 1976 is a guitarist and singer. Popularly known as P. Exeter Blue, he is a member of the rock band Deadsy and the husband of Mumbai-born musician Marieangela King.
