Age, Bio – How Old is Tiger Woods?
The only child of Earl Dennison Woods and Kultida “Tida” Woods (nee Punsawad), Eldrick Tont “Tiger” Woods was born on 30th December 1975 in Cypress, California. This means that on his birthday in 2019, Tiger Woods’ age will be 44. He was named Eldrick by his mother, who coined the name from the first letters of her and her husband’s names. “E” from Earl and “K” from Kultida to have Eldrick. Although the only child of his parents, Tiger has three half-siblings – two half brothers, Earl Jr., and Kevin, and a half-sister named Royce – from his father’s previous marriage.
The golf lord got the nickname, Tiger, from his father and he was so nicknamed as a way of honoring his father’s friend, Colonel Vuong Dang Phong, who had also gone by the same sobriquet. Both Tiger’s parents are of mixed ancestry, Kultida is half Thai, quarter Chinese and quarter Dutch, while his father, Earl, was part African-American, Native American and Chinese. Tiger simply puts his descent as “Cablinasian” which is short for Caucasian, Black, American Indian, and Asian.
Though born in Cypress, Woods grew up in Orange County, California. He started playing golf as early as age 2 and quickly became a child prodigy, arguably the greatest one in the history of golf. His father Earl, who learned to play golf three years before his [Tiger’s] birth was his first coach, and he retained that position until he asked professional golfers, Rudy Duran, and John Anselmo to assist him when Tiger was five years old. Tiger had the opportunity to play golf at the navy golf course in Los Alamitos because his father was a member of the US Army. He also had the privilege of playing at some golf courses in Long Beach.
Between ages 3 and 10, Tiger was able to shoot a 48 over nine holes, appear in Elite magazines and television shows, win Drive, Pitch, and Putt competition (under-10 category), as well as break 80. By the time Tiger was 16, he had won the Junior World Championships six times, four out of which were consecutive. (1988-1981).
Tiger’s budding golf career did not get in the way of his education, he attended Western High, in Anaheim, California, where he was still a student when he was named the youngest U.S. Junior Amateur champion at 15, a record that remained unbroken until 2010. While still in school, Tiger participated in the Nissan Los Angeles Open Tournament, his first PGA Tour event and was titled amateur player of the year, player of the year, and national amateur of the year by Golf Digest, Golf World, and Golfweek magazines respectively. He became the only person to win the U.S. Junior Amateur championship three consecutive times.
In 1994, he graduated from high school, the same year he won the U.S. Amateur Championship, the youngest person to do so until Danny Lee broke that record in 2008. Tiger also played in his school golf team until his graduation, under Coach Don Crosby. Woods proceeded to study Economics at Stanford University in the fall of 1994 on a golf scholarship and continued his winning streak there. Two years later, he dropped out of college to take his golf career to the professional level.
