There have been a few mutterings in recent times that the British film industry has been unable to produce a big name ever since people like , , Eddie Redmayne, and came onto the scene. These whispers have however died down following the emergence of actor Hugh Skinner who made a name for himself in theater before transferring his talent to the coveted silver screen. Hugh Skinner’s Biography
Hugh Skinner, whose full birth name is Hugh William Skinner, was born on the 6th of January 1985 in London, England. At around the age of four, the young boy moved to Perth, Australia for a year before returning to his home country later.
Skinner was raised in the cities of London and Tunbridge Wells and he received his education at Eastbourne College between 1998 and 2003. He later went on to enroll at the London Academy of Music and Dramatic Art (LAMDA), graduating in 2006.
Acting Career
Following the completion of his education, Hugh Skinner moved to start his career as an actor in 2007. His first line of work was in theatre where he played the roles of Kit in French Without Tears at the English Touring Theatre, Jose in Senora Carrar’s Rifles at Young Vic, and Viggo in The Enchantment at National Theatre. The following year, he moved to television, playing the supporting role of Felix in the BBC series – 2008 adaptation of Tess of the d’Urbervilles.
In the year 2009, Skinner was only able to land roles in theatre productions. His luck turned around in 2010 as he appeared in yet another BBC series, the miniseries Any Human Heart where he played the role of Lionel. In 2012, he made his film acting debut as one of the student revolutionaries named Joly in Les Miserables.
Hugh Skinner received worldwide attention in 2013 when it was announced that he would be playing a closeted gay man named Luis Carruthers in American Psycho at the Almeida Theatre. While performing the role, he was cast to play the character Will Humphries in the comedy W1A (2014-2017). A flurry of roles in both theatre and television followed for Skinner in 2014. They include the roles of Dr. Barnaby Ford in the BBC series Our Zoo (2014), that of Camille in Helen Edmundson’s adaptation of Thérèse Raquin at the Theatre Royal Bath, and Yephidikhov in The Cherry Orchard at the Young Vic.
In 2016, Skinner appeared in the comedy series The Windsors and Fleabag. The following year, he appeared in the series Harlots (2017) and the films Star Wars: The Last Jedi (2017), and Hampstead (2017) alongside .
In recent times, Hugh Skinner has appeared in Mamma Mia! Here We Go Again (2018) and in the final episode of Matthew Weiner’s anthology series The Romanoffs (2018). It has further been announced that he would be joining the cast of the Sky period drama, Little Birds (2020).
Who Is Hugh Skinner’s Girlfriend?
Hugh Skinner is an openly gay man and therefore does not have a girlfriend. This has however not stopped him from playing heterosexual characters, one of which he plays in the British comedy-drama series, Fleabag. On the show, his girlfriend is the protagonist and title character played by actress Phoebe Waller-Bridge.
The on-screen relationship between the two has prompted many fans to speculate that they might be an item off camera. This is very much far from the truth seeing that Skinner is not sexually attracted to members of the opposite sex, but most importantly, for the fact that his co-star on the show was at the time married to Irish filmmaker Conor Woodman.
