Bob Barker, a now-retired television game show host was born on December 12, 1923. The man whose white hair and charming smile became the iconic face of multiple generations started as a fighter pilot for the United States Army in World War II. After the war, Barker returned to complete his higher education at Drury College (now known as Drury University) and earned a degree in Economics, graduating summa cum laude.
Barker always had an affinity for broadcasting and media job. So despite studying economics and graduating with excellence, he moved to the home of media jobs in America, California in pursuit of a career in broadcasting. Barker moved to California armed with the experience of being a news editor and announcer at a local radio in Palm Beach in Florida. His experience and personality paid off for him in California and he was given his own radio show. Bob ran his show, an audience-participation show, The Bob Barker Show for six years.
Bob Barker ended up on the path that would make him a legend of the industry when game show producer, Ralph Edwards heard him on the radio one day and fell in love with his style and voice in a classic case of luck and opportunity meeting preparation and hard work. Edwards signed Bob Barker for the game show, Truth or Consequences, a show where contestants have to answer a trivia question correctly or be put through embarrassing stunts if they fail to do so. Bob hosted the show from December 31, 1956, till 1974. He earned more fame for his daytime hosting exploits, which include his trademark sign-off, ‘Bob Barker saying goodbye, and hoping all your consequences are happy ones’. He locked onto this trademark during his time on the show.
Post Truth or Consequences, Bob Barker hosted several other shows before he signed on to The Price is Right and hosted it for decades. He hosted shows like That’s My Line, End of the Rainbow, and Simon Says. On September 4, 1972, Barker became the host of the newly revived, The Price is Right by CBS. From 1972 to 1988, he was a host of the game show. After the passing of the original executive producer, Barker took over the role and made changes that cemented his legacy on Daytime television.
Bob Barker’s The Price is Right became the longest-running game show of all time in North America in September 2006, leading every other competing daytime TV show in ratings for 25 years. In the following month after setting the record, Bob retired from the Price is Right. During his time on the show, he won the Daytime Emmy Award 19 times, winning 14 individual awards for Outstanding Game Show host and five Outstanding Game Show awards as executive producer. He was also named the Time Magazine’s Greatest Game Show Host of All-Time and has a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame.
