Born in Glasgow, Scotland on March 11, 1967, John is the youngest of three children born to Marion and John Barrowman. His full name is John Scot Barrowman. He has a sister, Carol and a brother, Andrew. The mother of the home was a singer who also worked as a clerk and his father worked for heavy machinery company, Caterpillar. The Barrowman family spent eight years in Scotland after John’s birth before they relocated to the United States.

Barrowman attended Joliet West High School in Joliet where the family settled. During his time in high school, he was inspired by his English and music teachers who pushed him to hone and improve his artistic skills. Young Barrowman was continually coached along with the speech team of the school. This aided John to win roles on musical productions like Camelot, Anything Goes and a few others.

He played roles in plays like Matador (1991), Miss Saigon (1993), Sunset Boulevard (1994-1995) amongst others. Over the years, he continued to appear in plays in theaters in the UK. Barrowman also took a shot as a television presenter on the BBC on a number of programs.

When it came to his work on the prime time scene, Barrowman first starred as Peter Fairchild in Central Park West, which was shot in 1995. His next appearance came in 2000’s Titans. He started appearing as Malcolm Merlyn on CW’s series Arrow and Legends of Tomorrow in 2012. A contract signed in 2016 allowed him to appear on other superhero-themed shows like The Flash and Legends of Tomorrow produced by Greg Berlanti. Barrowman in May 2017, decided to leave the Arrowverse television franchise. Meanwhile, he is most famous in the UK for his work on the science fiction drama Doctor Who; wherein he played the role of Captain Jack Harkness.

John Barrowman is openly gay and has been so for a long time. He met Scott Gill, who would later become his husband at the Chichester Festival Theatre in 1993 while the production of Rope was on. They stayed together since then and entered a civil partnership on December 27, 2006.
