When you think of the women’s division of WWE, you think of Sasha Banks aka The Boss. With an early passion for wrestling, Sasha was born to entertain this way. Starting out as an independent wrestler in Boston, she has worked her way to the top. The WWE signed her in 2012 and she has blossomed into a star with many firsts to her name.

Banks was born as Mercedes Kaestner-Varnado on January 26, 1992, in Fairfield, California. Her mother is named Judith Varnado. Though the details of her immediate family are not readily available to the media, Sasha Banks has got very famous “first” cousins. They include rapper , singer Brandy, and her brother Ray J and music producer Daz Dillinger. Banks is of German, and like her famous cousins, African-American descent.

Sasha moved a lot while growing up, much because of her disabled younger brother whom she was trying to find the perfect school for. They finally settled in Boston, Massachusetts, there, Banks who grew up watching wrestling (her all-time favorite WWE star is the late Eddie Guerrero) began to wrestle. She also watched a lot of All Japan Women’s Pro-Wrestling.

At the age of 16, she began training with the Woburn-based independent circuit Chaotic Wrestling and began fighting under the moniker Mercedes KV. Her first ever match was an intergender tag team match. It took KV two years to win her first Chaotic Wrestling Women’s Championship in 2011, but when she did, she proved that it was worth the wait. KV successfully defended the title numerous times to become the longest reigning Chaotic Wrestling Women’s Champion in history. She broke Alexxis’ 182-day record.

While on CW, Sasha also fought in other independent circuits like the New England Championship Wrestling and the National Wrestling Alliance.

Sasha joined the WWE in 2012 when she was signed to their developmental brand NXT. It was after signing for the WWE that she adopted the moniker Sasha Banks.

Her time with NXT ended in October 2015 with her winning the NXT Women’s Championship. She had some outstanding moments with the brand including the NXT TakeOver: Brooklyn match which won Match of the Year at the NXT Year-End Awards. Her NXT TakeOver: Respect main event match was the first ever women’s 30-minute Iron Man match in WWE history.

Sasha then joined the RAW brand in 2016 winning her first match against Charlotte to become the WWE Women’s Championship title holder. She lost the title in a rematch but would regain it in October 2016.

Banks made history when she challenged Charlotte to compete for the title in the first-ever women’s Hell in a Cell match. The match also made history by being the first women’s match to enter the Hell in a Cell pay-per-view event. Banks lost the match but went on to regain the title yet again.

Sasha and Ton go way back since her days with the independent circuit. They worked together and when Sasha got signed by the WWE, Ton quit his job and moved to Tampa Florida with her. Tripple H got to hear of Ton not as a wrestler but as a costume designer, consequently, he offered him a job to design his costumes and soon Ton began working full-time as a WWE costume designer.
