The popular hip-hop artist was born Tyler Gregory Okonma on March 6, 1991, in Ladera Heights, California to a mother of African-American and Canadian descent, and a Nigerian father, whom he has never met. Tyler was raised with his sister in the neighborhood of his birth. He had a troubling childhood and had to change schools a lot. In 12 years, he attended 12 different schools spread across Sacramento and Los Angeles.

Tyler’s interest in music began at a young age. When he was seven, he began making his own imaginary albums, complete with covers, tracklist and song lengths, replacing the covers of album cases he could find with his own designs. It was well received, debuting at No. 3 on Billboard’s 200, and selling over 90,000 copies in the first week of its release.

Tyler released Cherry Bomb, his third studio album digitally through Odd Future Records on April 13, 2015, while physical copies followed two weeks later and were available in five different album covers. The set included collaborations with hip-hop favorites such as , SchoolBoy Q, and .

Two years later, Tyler re-entered the music scene with a fourth album, Scum Fuck Flower Boy, which was preceded by a single featuring , titled Who Dat Boy.
