Marshall went on to Haverford College for his undergraduate schooling, where he studied liberal arts and graduated in 1926.

Marshall played for the school football team, led the debate teams, and competed in tennis as a pupil of tennis great Bill Tilden while still at George School and Haverford.

He went to Yale Law School, where he earned a magna cum laude in 1931.

In 1931, J. Howard Marshall II married Eleanor Pierce for the first time. Upon divorcing in 1961, the couple had two sons.
