Even though he began his senior career in 1987 with 1. FC Pforzheim, he was with Mainz 05 for the majority of his footballing career from 1990 to 2001. By the time he retired, he had already played in 325 games for the club hence it was not surprising that the club made him its manager immediately he retired.

In the two previous attempts before then, he guided the team to a 4th place finish, keeping them narrowly away from the top flight. Unfortunately, Mainz was relegated again in the 2006-2007 season. Unable to bring the team back to the top flight, he resigned in the next season.
Before too long, he was appointed to manage yet another Bundesliga team, Borussia Dortmund in 2008 after the club had ended the previous season at the 13th spot on the table. His first season with Dortmund was successful as he won the DFB-Supercup and led the team to a 6th place finish in the Bundesliga. The next season, Klopp led the club to finish fifth and then he won the Bundesliga title twice in 2011 and 2012 which was the same year he won the FB-Pokal Final to give Dortmund its first ever domestic double. By the end of the 2014-2015 season, Klopp left Dortmund after taking the team to the UEFA Champions League finals in 2013.
In 2015, Klopp signed a deal with Liverpool to manage the English Premier League (EPL) club for the next three years. In the 2015-2016 season, he guided the English side to a UEFA Europa League final but lost out to Sevilla in the finals. In the same season, Liverpool ended second in the EPL only behind Chelsea. He would appear in the UEFA Champions League finals for the second time with the club in 2018 but unfortunately lost out after was injured and his goalkeeper made two errors that saw Liverpool submitting 1-3 to Real Madrid.
