If you ever watched blockbuster martial arts movies and never came across the name Jackie Chan then I doubt what it was you were really watching. In the last half-century, it is difficult to point to someone else who has had as much impact on martial-action movies more than Jackie. He has had his more than fair share of broken bones, has had his body battered enough to last him three lifetimes and is still doing what he loves to do that makes people happy.

Jackie Chan’s Bio/Wiki

Jackie was born on April 7, 1954, in British Hong Kong to Charles and Lee-Lee Chan and they named him Chan Kong-Sang. His parents nicknamed him Pao-pao Chinese meaning “Cannonball” because of how lively and full energy he was as a child.

The Changs worked at The Embassy of France in Hong Kong. The father Chen Zhiping held positions as the cook, while the mother Lily Chan was a cleaning staff. He was sent to the Nah-Hwa Primary School but Chan failed in his first year. When the family migrated to Australia in 1960, seven-year-old Chan was left at the Chinese Opera Research Institute. For the next decade, he strictly learned martial arts and acrobatics along with drama and singing.

Chan received his training in Hapkido under the grand master Jin Pal Kim and attained a black belt. He shortly attended Dickson College after he moved to Canberra. After struggling for a breakthrough, Jackie starred in an adult film All in the Family which had a little bit of a comedy feel to it, this was his first nude sex scene. It is the only film he has made to date without a scene of action or martial arts.

Chan had his lucky break when film producer Willie Chan (who would later become his long-time manager) invited him for a movie role after being impressed with one of his stunt works in 1976 which was when Bruce Lee had just passed away and the search was on for a successor. Knowing that he needed to be different to stand out from Bruce Lee, he added comedy and a slapstick approach to his stunts, birthing a refreshingly new “comedic kung fu” genre.

He went on to star in works such as Shaolin Wooden Men (1976 aka Shaolin Wooden Men), To Kill with Intrigue (1977 aka To Kill With Intrigue), Yi zhao ban shi chuang jiang hu (1978 aka Half A Loaf of Kung Fu) and Magnificent Bodyguards (1978 aka Magnificent Bodyguards), which all fared reasonably well at the cinemas. His real breakthrough was with the hit Drunken Master (1978 aka Drunken Master), which has become a favorite among martial arts film fans.

Jackie went on to star in more hits – Police Story 2, Miracles – Mr. Canton and Lady Rose,  Armour of God 2: Operation Condor (aka Armour of God 2) and Supercop. With his larger than life stature in Asia cemented, the US market had not fully bowed to his superstar charm, in 1995, the action film Rumble in the Bronx finally gave him his box office mega-hit in the US Market.

It’s interesting that a man of such physical vigour would be given to music. He has released an impressive 20 albums since 1984. His songs have been in Cantonese, Mandarin, Japanese, Taiwanese and English. He often sings the theme songs of his films. Jackie speaks nine languages fluently. In the course of his many stunt performances, he has fractured his skull, dislocated his pelvis, broken his fingers, toes, nose, both cheekbones, hips, sternum, neck, ankle and ribs.
