Although he is currently playing for the Detroit Lions of the National Football League (NFL) as a quarterback, the name Jake Rudock is not one that is new in the world of American football, but one that has become a household name not just to Detriot Lions’ fans but also to lovers of American football in general, especially those who follow the game from the grassroots level to professional level.

Rudock began playing American football from his high school days at St. Thomas Aquinas High School, Fort Lauderdale, Florida. After high school, he began playing for the University of Iowa and he is well known for being the starting quarterback for the 2013 and 2014 Iowa Hawkeyes. He also played for the University of Michigan and was among the 2015 Michigan Wolverines.

Jake Rudock – Bio

Jake was born in Miami, on the 21st day of January 1993 as Jacob Michael Rudock. He, however, he grew up in Weston and attended St. Thomas Aquinas High School, Fort Lauderdale, all in the state of Florida. He played soccer with the school team and thanks to his contributions, St. Thomas Aquinas made it to state semifinals in 2009 after he made 128 out of 197 passes for 1,945 yards.

During his senior days, he led the team to both district, regional, state and national competitions setting outstanding records as a starting quarterback, then for total yards, completion percentage, completions and attempts, and lots more. He won the Broward County Player of the Year award.

Before graduating from high school in 2011, Jake Rudock received collegiate offers from the universities of Colorado, Iowa, Memphis and Illinois but decided to go with the University of Iowa. During his first year, he redshirted and also didn’t play the following year. During his junior year, he played 13 games, starting them all. His first start, however, was in the game against Northern Illinois. He played every offensive down for the Hawkeyes but he, unfortunately, lost to Northern Illinois University 30 to 27.

His most outstanding game during his junior year was the game against LSU in the Outback Bowl. Although the game ended in a 21 to 14 lost, Rudock recorded nine out of twenty-two pass attempts for 102 yards with just one interception. The next season, he played all thirteen games, setting a record of 204–346 pass attempts, 13 interceptions, 18 touchdowns, and a total of 2,383 yards.

The 2014 season wasn’t one of his best years, it was in this year that he recorded the TaxSlayer Bowl loss to Tennessee but he still finished the season completing 213 out of 345 attempts for 2,436 yards including five interceptions and sixteen touchdowns. In 2015, he moved to the University of Michigan after the Big Ten Conference approved his transfer and he was immediately certified to play in that year. In a November game against Indiana, he set a record of six touchdown passes for a single-game and won the co-Big Ten player of the Week alongside his receiver Jehu Chesson. The following week, he also set a record as the first quarterback in the history of college football to pass for 250 yards in three games in a row.

In 2016, Jake Rudock was named the MVP of the Citrus Bowl. He became the first QB in the history of Michigan to record 250 yards in five games in a row and the second Michigan QB after John Navarre to throw 3,000 yards in a single season. He ended the season as setting a single-season completion percentage of 64 and a single-season passing yards of 3,017.

Professional Career

In 2016, Rudock was selected by the Detroit Lions in the 6th round (191st overall) of the NFL Draft. In September, he was moved to the practice squad where he remained till November. He didn’t make any appearance during his rookie season since he was made the third-string QB behind Dan Orlovsky and . After the 2016 season, Rudock started serving Stafford’s backup because Orlovsky was not re-signed.

The team officials drafted Brad Kaaya from the University of Miami during the 2017 NFL Draft to compete Rudock’s position the preseason. As expected, Jakes won the backup job and attempted his first NFL pass in the game against the Baltimore Ravens.

Rudock is the son of Kathy and Rob Rudock. His father is a lawyer and his mom is a teacher and a Masters degree holder. He has two siblings – an older brother who is a graduate of the University of Miami medical school and a sister who holds a masters degree from Florida State University.
