James Develin’s story is the perfect example of the non-existence of a set path to success, specifically for young athletes hoping to make it as professionals in the highest level of their sport. The two-time Super Bowl winner, unarguably a very huge prospect when he was heading to college at Brown University, went undrafted in the 2010 NFL Draft and had to play for a while in two other somewhat inferior and uncompetitive leagues before joining one of the best NFL teams, the New England Patriots. He has since grown to become a pivotal member of the team.

Biography

James Develin was born James Rittenhouse Develin, Jr. to Donna and James Develin Sr. on the 23rd of July, 1988, in Gilbertsville, Pennsylvania. From a very young age, Develin showed the exceptional athletic ability that helped him letter in two sports; football and lacrosse, at Boyertown Area Senior High School.

During his time at Boyertown, Develin, who was captain of his football team, earned First-team All-Area, First-team All-Pac, and All-Berks County selections. The Boyertown MVP was further selected to play in the Berks County All-star game, as well as the NationalAllStars.com Bowl. His incredible performances were not limited to sports as the young man also excelled in his academics, which earned him a National Football Foundation and College Hall of Fame Scholar-Athlete Award, the Warren O. Fry Memorial Award, and the Tall Cedars Football Scholar-Athlete Award.

After graduating from high school, James Develin accepted an offer to attend the Ivy League Brown University where he played football and also majored in Mechanical Engineering. In his first year, he recorded 12 tackles (six solo) and one sack. He showed significant improvement in his game in his sophomore year as he recorded 50 tackles (28 solo), 13.5 tackles-for-loss, 6 sacks, 3 quarterback hurries, and 3 fumble recoveries to earn Second Team All-Ivy honors. Develin, again, earned Second Team All-Ivy honors in his junior year after he recorded 34 tackles, 9.5 tackles-for-loss, and 3 sacks. In his final college year, he set college career highs in tackles (53) and tackles-for-loss (16) as he further recorded five sacks, 1 interception, and 2 fumble recoveries.

Despite his seemingly impressive year in college, James Develin, as was expected by many sports analysts, went undrafted in the 2010 NFL Draft. He tried out for the Cleveland Browns but was rejected by the team, leaving him with no option but to head to the Arena Football League (AFL) to play for the Oklahoma City Yard Dawgz. Develin later joined the Florida Tuskers of the United Football League (UFL) before eventually getting signed to the practice squad of the Cincinnati Bengals of the NFL in November 2010. In 2012, after he was waived by the Bengals, he signed to the New England Patriots’ practice squad and was later promoted to the active roster as the rest became history.
