Hollywood superstar and the amazing Scottish actor James Mcavoy was born on April 21, 1979, in Glassglow Scotland to Elizabeth Mcavoy who practised psychiatric nursing and James Mcavoy who was a builder. James parents’ marriage was not a long one, their marital bliss shattered, ending in a divorce in 1985 when he was barely 7.

He was born a Roman Catholic, however, he doesn’t practice it anymore. After his parents separated, he ended up with his maternal grandparents; Mary and James Johnstone due to his mother’s ill health. His grandfather was a butcher at Glasglow.

Early Life

James has two siblings; a sister whose name was only given as Joy and a younger half-brother, Donald who is most likely from his father’s later relationship. As a result of his parents’ divorce and the living conditions after, James has not had any relationship or contact with his father James Snr. since he was a child.

He attended St Thomas Aquinas Secondary School in Jordan Hill Glasglow and Royal Scotish Academy of Music and Drama. As a kid and due to how devoted the family was to the Christian religion, James once had a desire to be a priest but it never worked it. He worked at a bakery during his school days to support the situation at home with his aged grandparents.

Career

James’ debut in acting was a teen appearance in the movie The Near Room. He admitted that at the time, he did not have so much interest in being an actor but he soon made the decision to study acting after he developed feelings while on set for his co-star Alana Brady and that decision sure paid off. After he graduated from the Royal Scotish Academy of Music and Drama in 2000, he began to make guest appearances in TV shows and movies. His first major movie role was as a gay character in the play Out in the Open which he executed to perfection, causing directors to recognize his talent and offer him other roles.

From the beginning, McAvoy has been on the picky side with the kind of roles he plays and as such, the early 2000s saw him rejecting a lot of roles. In those years, he took up roles in movies and shows like Band of Brothers (2001), White Teeth (2002), Frank Herbert’s Children of Dune (2003), State of Play (2003) and others. At this time, viewers the world over have begun to recognize the expertise McAvoy displayed and of course, they wanted more of him.

2005 saw Jame McAvoy’s public profile rising higher than it had ever been and of course, it had a lot to do with the time he spent working with Walt Disney on The Chronicles of Narnia: The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe. The movie’s success at the box office hit grossed over £8.7 million at 498 cinemas in one weekend. This, in turn, skyrocketed the demand for McAvoy as directors from nook and crannies came bearing roles and mouth-watering deals. Some of his most famous works till date include Wanted (2008), The Last Station (2009), Welcome to the Punch (2011), Filth (2012), and his role as Professor Charles Xavier in the famous Xmen series of 2010 until 2019.

Apart from acting, James McAvoy has also done voice works for animated films like Angelina Ballerina: The Next Steps.
