Jane Fonda is an Oscar-winning actress and former model. Born into a dynasty of prominent Hollywood actors, Fonda launched her acting career in 1960 earning 2 Tony award nominations for her Broadway debut in There Was a Little Girl. She gained more prominence in years that followed as she starred in several successful comedy films. She relocated to France in 1963 where she equally established herself as an international film star.
Returning to the United States in the 1970s, Fonda proved to be a serial box-office star. With a career spanning nearly 6 decades, the Hollywood star has received 2 Academy Awards, 2 BAFTA awards, and 4 Golden Globe awards. In addition to her excellent long-running Hollywood career, Jane Fonda is also fairly famous for her interesting relationship timeline. Let us delve into the dating history of the Hollywood icon; high-profile relationships, 3 marriages and every other thing in between.
Jane Fonda and Her Relationships Through The Years
Marriage to Roger Vadim
Since the 1960s, Jane Fonda got together with French-Russian filmmaker and director Roger Vadim. The actress had relocated to France in 1963 in order to escape her father’s overwhelming shadow in Hollywood. The duo met at a birthday party which was organized for Fonda by her French agent. Things went really fast between them as they moved in together soon after their first meeting. In 1964, having become fluent in French, Jane Fonda played the lead role in Vadim’s film La ronde, the first of several other collaborations.
The lovestruck couple eventually tied the knot on August 14, 1965, in a private ceremony held at the Dunes Hotel in Las Vegas. On September 28, 1968, Jane Fonda and Vadim welcomed their only child together, a daughter named Vanessa Vadim, after English actress Vanessa Redgrave. However, the whirlwind romance between the couple came to an end in January 1973 when their divorce was finalized. The duo remained amicable after their divorce as they shared custody of their daughter.
In their separate memoirs released several years after their separation, Jane Fonda and Roger Vadim have made stunning revelations about aspects of their marriage including their adventurous sex life as well as Vadim’s financial recklessness. Roger Vadim died in Paris on February 11, 2000, at age 72.
Marriage to Tom Hayden
Jane Fonda gave a second shot at marriage with American activist and politician Tom Hayden. As Fonda was also an activist, Hayden connected with her after hearing her give an eloquent speech at an anti-Vietnam war rally. It remains unclear when they began dating, however, they tied the knot on January 16, 1973, 3 days after Fonda’s divorce from her first husband was finalized.
Fonda and Hayden welcomed their first child on July 7, 1973, a son named Troy O’Donovan Garity. He was named Troy O’Donovan after Vietnamese resistance leader Nguyen Van Troi and the 19th-century Irish leader Jeremiah O’Donovan Rossa. The couple also adopted a teenager of African-American descent, Mary Luana Williams, born to members of the Black Panther political organization.
Tom Hayden dabbled into politics in the late 70s with heavy financial backing from his film star wife, Jane Fonda. He was first elected into the California State Assembly in 1982 and his stint in the State legislature spanned nearly 2 decades. Jane Fonda’s marriage to Tom Hayden ended after 17 years and their divorce was finalized on June 10, 1990, in Santa Monica.
Marriage to Ted Turner
Following her 2nd divorce, Jane Fonda swiftly found love again as she got together with American media mogul and CNN founder, Ted Turner. They got married on December 21, 1991. During their marriage, the power couple worked together on several charities as well as showbiz projects. However, as revealed in Fonda’s spellbinding 2005 autobiography, “My Life So Far: Jane Fonda,” their marriage was hugely marred by spells of infidelity on the part of Turner. His continuous cheating, coupled with Fonda’s conversion to Christianity, led to their divorce which was finalized on May 22, 2001, in Atlanta. Interestingly, Jane Fonda has revealed that Ted Turner remains her favorite ex-husband.
Relationship with Richard Perry
Jane Fonda took a relatively long hiatus from dating following the end of her 10-year long marriage to Ted Turner. All that changed in the spring of 2009 when the Hollywood actress met American record producer, Richard Perry. The duo was introduced by a mutual friend Carrie Fisher at a dinner party.
After the dinner, Perry entertained Fonda further at his Beverly Hills home which was formerly owned by Ronald Reagan. It is on record that Fonda never left Perry’s home after that first visit and things happened pretty fast between them.
In 2012, the couple purchased another Beverly Hills mansion located in Trousdale Estates. After 8 blissful years together, the duo announced their split in January 2017. They also put up the Beverly Hills home they once shared up for sale. According to a May 2018 interview, it appears that this would be Fonda’s last attempt at romance.
