Day was born on 12 November 1987 in Beaudesert, Queensland, Australia which makes his ethnicity to be Australian. At age six, his father enrolled him at the Beaudesert Golf Club where he participated as a junior member, playing six holes a day. By the time he turned 8, his family relocated to Rockhampton where he continued playing golf and started winning in minor leagues in that area. The golfer attended Kooralbyn International School and later proceeded to Hills International College and it is said that the choices of school for him by his family were because of the golf facilities available there as at the time. He was also inspired to improve his golf abilities after reading about in a book he borrowed from his roommate in college.

The golf star landed his first major win when he was 13 years old in the Australian Masters Junior Event. Also, before he turned professional, Day won the Australian Junior Order of Merit twice and in 2004, he won the Australian Boys’ Amateur. On the international scene, he emerged the winner of the Boys 15–17 division held in the United States in the 2004 Callaway World Junior Championship.

The talented golfer is the son of Alvin, who was an Australian and Dening who was born in the Philippines but later relocated to Australia in the early 1980s. He is the only son of his parents alongside two other sisters named Yanna Day and Kim Day. His father is said to have placed him on the path towards being a golf legend right from childhood, however, Day recalls he was too hard on him and would usually use his fist on him if he did not perform well at his golf games.

By the time he turned 12, the golfer lost his father to cancer of the stomach and his mother is also known to be battling with the disease as she had undergone surgery for cancer sometime in 2017.

Another tragic event that has transpired in the family of the golfer is the loss of his relatives in the November 2013 Typhoon Haiyan in the Philippines which also claimed the life of his grandmother.
