Nicknamed Haitian Sensation or JPP, Jason Pierre-Paul was born to Haitian parents who immigrated to the United States in the 1980s before his birth on January 1, 1989, in Deerfield Beach, Florida. The American football defensive end is currently with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers of the National Football League (NFL).

Jason was a wonder to behold during his days of playing college football. Thus, the New York Giants didn’t waste any time in picking him in the first round of the 2010 NFL Draft after which he further made the team proud with two Pro Bowls and a win at Super Bowl XLVI.

Before NFL, Jason Pierre-Paul was just a student at Deerfield Beach High School who played basketball so well but after four years on the court, a leg injury made him divert to football. Fresh out of high school, the defensive end totaled 51 tackles and 19 tackles in a loss for his new team at College of the Canyons in California. He later recorded 14 sacks, earning First-team All-WSC and All-America honors. Moving on, he made good impressions with his performance on the football team at Fort Scott Community College, Kansas, in 2008. His impressive stats at the college earned him First-Team Little All-American honors.

In 2009, he made a transfer to the University of South Florida in Tampa, Florida and appeared in thirteen games for the Bulls. He recorded seven starts, 45 tackles (16.5 for losses), 6.5 sacks, one interception, broke up three passes, and forced two fumbles. His time with the team brought more recognition as he got named First-team All-America by Pro Football Weekly and equally took the first team All-Big East among other awards. Jason was also named the defensive lineman performer of the week in the college performance awards.

His college career, however, came to an abrupt end after his junior year when Jason Pierre-Paul declared for the 2010 NFL Draft, forgoing his senior year in college.

NFL Career

Jason Pierre-Paul made his entrance into the National Football League in the 2010 season after the New York Giants selected him in the first round, 15th overall pick in the year’s NFL Draft. The contract with the Giants came with a five-year, $20.05 million deal which has $11.629 million guaranteed. Subsequently, his NFL debut came on September 12, 2010, when he opened for the New York Giants recording two tackles. By the end of the season, he had played 16 games, totaling 24 solo tackles and recording 4.5 sacks. Accordingly, Pro Football Rosters named him to 2010 All-NFL Draft Team.

In his second season, Pierre-Paul got more playing time, recording 12 starts. He was selected to his first Pro Bowl and was named a First-team All-Pro. His 2011 season boasts 65 tackles, 16.5 sacks, one safety, and two forced fumbles. With his help, the Giants won 37–34 in a game against the Dallas Cowboys, the game also positioned him as the first player in NFL history to record a sack, forced fumble and blocked a field goal in one game. In December 27, 2011, without being on the ballot, he was voted to his first Pro Bowl.

In 2012, he recorded his first career interception and returned it for a touchdown, completing the season with 6.5 sacks and 43 total tackles. Despite going through a back surgery in 2013, Jason Pierre-Paul caught another interception of a pass by Scott Tolzien and returned it for another touchdown. He also finished the 2014 season with 12.5 sacks, 77 tackles, three forced fumbles, and six passes defended.

In 2015, Jason was branded with a franchise tag by the New York Giants which was non-exclusive. Later in the season, he had a serious hand injury in a fireworks accident which happened at home. It cost him his right index finger but didn’t stop him from sealing a one-year deal with the Giants on October 27. However, the injury took its toll on him as he lost weight and had to wear a padded club on his injured hand which had a negative impact on his performance.

In the 2016 season, he got an offer from the Arizona Cardinals but chose to stay with the New York Giants. The season saw him named NFC Defensive Player of the Week. He had a sports hernia surgery and missed out on the rest of the season.

The franchise tag was placed on him again in the 2017 season, this time, he signed a four-year, $62 million contract with the Giants with $40 million guaranteed. Nonetheless, he was traded by the Giants to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers on March 22, 2018. This came in the third round pick in the 2018 NFL Draft and a swap of fourth-round picks.

The defensive end comes from a family of Haitian immigrants who left their home country for the United States in 1983. His parents are Jean, a legally blind man and his wife Marie. Jason was raised together with two siblings, Herbie and Nadie.

Though there’s no record of his marriage yet, he does have a child with his girlfriend Farraw Germain. Their son Josiah Pierre-Paul was born in 2015.
