Javier Mascherano is arguably one of the best footballers that Argentina has ever produced. He is noted for his incredible defensive skills, leadership skills, passing accuracy, to name a few. Mascherano, like most Argentine football players, began his career playing in the Primera División Argentina.

Javier is the second most capped player in the history of the Argentina national team bested only by Javier Zanetti. He has made 140K appearances and counting. He has gone to four FIFA World Cups including Russia 2018. His other appearances for his national side include; five Copa América tournaments and two Olympic tournaments. He is the first male footballer in history to win two Olympic gold medals since 1968.

Javier has played for clubs like West Ham, Liverpool, and Barcelona. However, he will most likely be remembered for his Barcelona career which spanned almost a decade. With Barca, he has won a whopping 5 La Liga trophies, 2 UEFA Champions League titles, and 5 Copa del Rey trophies.

Javier Mascherano’s Family – Wife (Fernanda) and Kids

There are many footballers out there who have become notorious for their frequent escapades with supermodels and actresses but Mascherano, a family man to the core, begs to exempt himself from that lot. For a long time in his life, Javier was in a relationship with a certain Fernanda Moreno whom he met while in his teens.

They got married in 2008 and have remained in marital bliss since then with no rumors of infidelity whatsoever. It appears his leadership skills extend way beyond the pitch, a number of footballers can actually learn a thing or two about loyalty from the Argentine star.

Fernanda Moreno isn’t one to feed the tabloids either. She has maintained a very low profile with just a little information about her life available for the media’s consumption. From what we gathered, Mrs. Mascherano was born as Maria Fernanda Moreno on the 18th of June 1984 in Buenos, Aires, Argentina which makes her exactly the same age as her husband who was also born in 1984 too. As a matter of fact, they share the same birth month, Javier’s is the 8th of June.

From the many snaps of her that her hubby has posted online and the ones paparazzi cameras have taken, Fernanda is quite a beautiful lady, coupled with her calm demeanor, it is quite obvious why Javier made her his Mrs.

2008, the year they got married was Javier’s second year in Liverpool which he joined from West Ham United. Two years later in 2010, Javier’s wife made the news after reports surfaced that she was the major reason why Javier began seeking to leave Liverpool and it didn’t go down well with many as she was hugely criticized.

As the story goes, Fernanda was very unhappy living in Liverpool because she couldn’t speak English nor have any friends. To make matters worse she was also pregnant. After a period of enduring the stress of living in the UK, Fernanda left her hubby in the UK and went back to her native Argentina, thus putting more pressure on Mascherano to think of a new location that would be favorable for his family and it wasn’t long before the family man did just that. In August 2010, he signed a four-year contract worth €24 million with La Liga side Barcelona.

The move broke the hearts of many Liverpool fans who held him in very high esteem. They even made him his own song which was sung to the tune of the “Seven Nation Army” song by the White Stripes.

A few of his countrymen including showed their support for his decision to leave because of family concerns.

Making the move more painful was the fact that Liverpool had sort of rescued Mascherano from the contract mess he was entangled with at West Ham. Neil Warnock in his article in wrote referencing Javier’s time at West Ham and Fernanda’s supposed unhappiness with her abode in the UK saying; “I bet his wife was happy then.”

Well, looking back, Mascherano probably has more blessings than setbacks to count for joining Barca.

The couple shares three children together including daughters; Lola (born in 2006), Alma (born in 2009) and a son Bruno who was born on April 12th, 2017.
