Jenna Elfman was born Jennifer Mary Butala, the youngest child of Sue Grace and Richard Butala, on the 30th of September, 1971 in Los Angeles, California. Her mother was a homemaker while her father was an executive with Hughes Aircraft. She is of Croatian ancestry.

As a child, Elfman was very much interested in becoming a dancer. She was enrolled in ballet classes as she attended the Los Angeles County High School for the Arts. The young dancer however later gave up the Italian Renaissance/ French concert dance form after a tendon came off her bone. But that did not stop her from still doing the thing she loved as she went on to make a career out of it.

Elfman became a professional dancer after dropping out of California State University, Northridge (CSUN). Some of her works as a dancer are in music videos like Halo by Depeche Mode, Black Lodge by Anthrax, and Somebody’s Crying by . While dancing, Elfman had hoped to become an actress, so she auditioned for roles in both movies, sitcoms, and commercials. She was successful in bagging roles in a few commercials before transitioning to television with her first notable appearance being in the short-lived 1996 ABC sitcom Townies.

Her next major role was in another ABC sitcom titled Dharma & Greg where she appeared as Dharma Freedom Finkelstein Montgomery. She was a main cast member of the show, appearing in 119 episodes in the show’s five-year lifespan. During that time, she won the 1999 and 2000 TV Guide Favorite Actress in a Comedy Award and the 1999 Golden Globe Award for Best Actress in a Television Series Musical or Comedy, among several other nominations.

Other shows and movies in which Jenna Elfman has appeared in are Keeping Faith (2000), Courting Alex (2006), Accidentally on Purpose (2009-2010), Friends With Benefits (2011), 1600 Penn (2012-2013), and Growing Up Fisher (2014).

Jenna met her husband in February 1991 while she was auditioning for a role in a Sprite commercial. The two hit it off and were said to have almost soon after began exclusively seeing each other. Their relationship lasted for four years before they decided to take the next step and exchanged vows on the 18th of February, 1995 in a Scientology ceremony. Jenna and Bodhi are both practicing Scientologists even though they were raised in the Jewish and Catholic faiths, respectively.
