In the space of three years, Jessica Mauboy rose from being a contestant on the 4th season of the Australian Idol to become one of the most successful female Australian musicians with the second highest-selling Australian album of 2009 which was also certified platinum by Australian Recording Industry Association (ARIA).

Jessica Mauboy is Australian, she was born on the 4th of August 1989 in Darwin, Northern Territory. Her birth name is Jessica Hilda Mauboy and she has 4 sisters 3 of whom are elder to her – Sandra, Jenny and Catherine; and Sophia who is the youngest in their family. The girls were raised by their parents Fred and Therese Mauboy in addition to having their grandmother Harriett, present in their lives while growing up.

As a kid, Jessica Mauboy was tutored at Wulagi Primary School and Sanderson High School both in her native Darwin home. She took to music from an early age which was noticeably a family thing for the Mauboy’s. She, however, dropped out of school at the age of 11 for reasons we are yet to ascertain. Nevertheless, in her early teens, Jessica was already mounting the podium on various music competitions, one of such was Telstra ‘Road to Tamworth’ competition at the 2004 Tamworth Country Music Festival in Tamworth, New South Wales which she won.

Her emergence as the winner of the competition earned her a recording contract with Sony Music Australia which saw to the recording of Girls Just Wanna Have Fun, a Cyndi Lauper country-inspired rendition. The work didn’t see much success but the exposure was all that Jessica Mauboy needed at that stage to keep alive her dreams of singing her way to the top.

By 2006, in Alice Springs, Northern Territory at the 4th season of the Australian Idol, Jessica Hilda took a step that has become the genesis of why you are searching for information about her. The singing sensation auditioned for the Australian Idol; a singing competition where she first sang ‘s I Have Nothing with which she earned nods from all three judges on the show. Mauboy progressed through the competition to the end as runner-up to Damien Leith despite almost losing out due to a sore throat and at another time being reported as deserving to be dismissed as a result of her former contract with Sony Music Australia. However, the contract had already expired by then and would not be germane for her eviction.

Following Jessica Mauboy’s spectacular performances at the talent hunt show, Sony Music Australia signed her again for keeps this time. Her first work under the label was released on 24th February 2007 as a live album titled The Journey. She then released her debut studio album titled Been Waiting on November 2008, it was followed by Get ‘Em Girls (2010) and Beautiful (2013) which were all released under the Sony Music Australia label.

Some of her top singles include ‘Running Back’, ‘Let Me Be Me’, both from the album Been Waiting; ‘Beautiful’, ‘Never Be the Same’, and ‘To the End of the Earth’ from Beautiful then ‘Saturday Night’ and ‘What Happened to Us’ from Get ‘Em Girls.

As an actress, the star has recorded film credits in ‘Bran Nue Dae’ (2010) and ‘The Sapphires’ (2012) with the main cast role as Billie Carter in the television series ‘The Secret Daughter’ (2016–17).

From a young age, Hilda was also a known member of her local church choir where she sang with her grandmother. Back home, the Mauboy’s family house was one that was hardly ever bereft of the sound of music. Her father will compliment his wife’s singing with delectable tunes from the guitar, while the rest of the family spiced up their routine family concert with their melodious voices. This family affair earned them the noisiest house on the block recognition back in their Darwin, Northern Territory neighborhood.

 

Jessica Mauboy’s dad is an Indonesian from West Timor, he works as an electrician while his wife is an Indigenous Australian from the Kuku Yalanji people who have their abode in the rainforest regions of Far North Queensland. It is not known how the family’s affinity to music started but as we know, it has paid off with Jessica who is bringing honor to the family name as an R&B and pop singer, songwriter and by extension an actress.

The music star began a long distance relationship with Themeli Magripilis in January 2009 and by September 2016, she moved in with him in his Sydney home. The two are however not yet married but widely recognized as each other’s partners.
