He began his football career while he was in high school. He attended Edward W. Bok Technical High School in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. While he was in high school, Ward participated in various sporting activities including basketball and football. Starting his football career as a wide receiver and safety, Ward was later moved to play as a stand up defensive end in his junior year; thus finishing his high school career in 2011. He was named to the All-City first-team in the same year.

He finished the season with a record of 30 tackles in 16 games. The following season, he underwent a surgery which ruled him out for the rest of the season. He was in action in 5 games for the Raiders before he was listed as one of the inactive players.
