He began his football career while he was in high school. He attended Edward W. Bok Technical High School in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. While he was in high school, Ward participated in various sporting activities including basketball and football. Starting his football career as a wide receiver and safety, Ward was later moved to play as a stand up defensive end in his junior year; thus finishing his high school career in 2011. He was named to the All-City first-team in the same year.

Being a good sportsman, Ward failed to record same in his academics which led him to attend Globe Institute of Technology for a period of two years so he could improve his academic grades. He played for Globe’s football team finishing with a record of 26 tackles and 2 sacks in 7 gameplays in 2012. After the 2013 season, Ward transferred to the University of Illinois where he continued his college career.

Playing for the University of Illinois football team, Ward didn’t take much time to prove himself as one of the top players of the team. He recorded a total number of 51 tackles and led the conference with 4 fumble recoveries as well as 2 sacks during the 2014 season. In his senior year, he played both as a defensive end as well as a defensive tackle, registering 53 tackles, one forced fumble, one fumble recovery, and 1.5 sacks. He recorded his career-high against the University of Iowa having 11 tackles. He finished his college career with a total of 104 tackles, 3 passes defended, 5 fumble recoveries and 4.5 sacks.

Ending his college career with an impressive record, Ward was projected to be a seconder or third rounder in the National football league draft in 2016. After participating in the NFL scouting combine drills and Illinois Pro Day which was coordinated by head coach Lovie Smith; Ward moved up to a second-round consideration.

He was picked by the Oakland Raiders as the 44^th overall during the NFL draft of 2016. His rookie season was cut short following a knee injury he sustained. He finished the season with a record of 30 tackles in 16 games. The following season, he underwent a surgery which ruled him out for the rest of the season. He was in action in 5 games for the Raiders before he was listed as one of the inactive players.
