Jim Boeheim is the long-serving head coach of Syracuse University’s men’s basketball team. The 2006 John R. Wooden Legends of Coaching Award recipient, who was inducted into the Basketball Hall of Fame in 2005, has never experienced a losing season ever since he began coaching in 1976.

Biography

Jim Boeheim was born James Arthur Boeheim to Janet and Jim Boeheim Sr. on the 17th of November, 1944 in Lyons, New York where he was raised. As a child attending Lyons Central High School, Boeheim loved to play the game of basketball but was deemed not good enough since he was not recruited by any college.

Upon graduation, he enrolled at Syracuse University where he was a walk-on on the school’s basketball team. By the time he was in his senior year, Boeheim had become a much better basketball player and was named the team’s captain. That year, he led the school to a 22-6 record that took them into the NCAA tournament for only the second time in their history. Boeheim went on to graduate with a bachelor’s degree in social science before embarking on a professional basketball career that saw him win two championships with the Scranton Miners of the Eastern Professional Basketball League.

Coaching Career

In 1969, following his short-lived professional basketball career, Jim Boeheim decided to pursue a coaching career. His first job happened to be at his alma mater where he was hired as a graduate assistant. A few years later, Boeheim was promoted to full-time assistant coach and was notably a part of the coaching team that helped the school reach its first Final Four NCAA Tournament appearance in 1975.

The following year, Boeheim’s boss vacated his head coach role for another one, giving room for him to take up the role. In his first season in charge, the rookie coach helped his school to a 26-4 record and an NCAA Tournament Sweet 16 place. Syracuse, under Boeheim’s leadership, soon became a perennial post-season team, making an appearance in either the NCAA or NIT tournaments every year in the 1980s. In 1986, the year Syracuse managed a runner-up finish in the NCAA tournament, Jim Boeheim was offered the opportunity to take the head coach job at Ohio State but turned it down to continue his stay at his alma mater. He has since that time remained very loyal to the school which he has enjoyed considerable success with in his four-plus decade college basketball coaching career.

In the 1990s, Jim Boeheim became a USA national basketball coach while still coaching Syracuse. He first served as an assistant coach for the US team that competed in the 1990 FIBA World Championship. In 2001, he led the Young Men’s Team to win gold at the World Championship in Japan, which earned him the USA Basketball 2001 National Coach of the Year award. He has subsequently been a part of the coaching teams that went to the 2006 FIBA World Championship, 2008 Summer Olympics in Beijing, and the 2012 Summer Olympics

For his role as head coach of Syracuse University’s men’s basketball team, Jim Boeheim takes home an annual salary of $2.144 million which makes him the highest-paid employee at the university. However, when he comes in comparison to his colleagues, Boeheim is ranked as the 20th highest paid coach, with the highest earner being Duke Universiy’s Mike Krzyzewski who earns over $7 million.

Family – Wife, Son, and Daughter

Jim Boeheim is currently married to Julie Boeheim (nee Greene). The couple was said to have met each other in 1994 at a party in Lexington on Derby Day. As the story goes, the pair were said to have begun dating each other almost soon after their first meeting before going on to exchange vows three years later in 1997.

Julie Boeheim, who is 21 years her husband’s junior, was born in Miami, Florida but raised in Kentucky where she attended the University of Kentucky and graduated with a merchandising, apparel and textiles degree. Together, the couple has welcomed three children; Jimmy and twins, Buddy and Jamie. Boeheim has another child, a daughter named Elizabeth, from his first marriage to Elaine Boeheim which lasted for 18 years.
