Naval da Costa, Joo Mário Eduardo (born January 19, 1993), also known as Joo Mário, is a Portuguese professional footballer who now plays for Benfica as a midfielder. He began his career at Sporting CP, where he progressed through the junior system until being loaned to Vitória de Setbal in 2014 and then returning to be a key member of squads that won significant championships, including the 2015 Taça de Portugal. He joined Inter Milan in 2016 and had loan spells at West Ham United and Lokomotiv Moscow before returning to Sporting in 2020, also on loan.

In 2014, Joo Mário made his senior debut for Portugal. He was selected for the 2018 World Cup and also competed in Euro 2016, winning the latter.

Joao Mario’s Career

Joo Mário arrived to Sporting CP in 2004 at the age of 11 after a brief youth career with local FC Porto in his hometown, where he was used as a center defender. He went on to continue his development with the Lisbon club. He was called up for a UEFA Europa League group stage game away against S.S. Lazio on 14 December 2011, alongside youth graduates Betinho, Ricardo Esgaio, Tiago Ilori, and Joo Carlos, as the Lions had already secured first place in their group: he entered the pitch in the 76th minute, replacing Oguchi Onyewu, in a 0–2 away loss.

In his first full season as a senior, Joo Mário played in 31 games (30 as a starter) for Sporting CP B in the Segunda Liga, helping the team to a fourth-place finish. He was loaned to Vitória F.C. for the balance of the season on January 8, 2014, starting all but one of his Primeira Liga appearances and was named the league’s best young player for January and February.

Joo Mário began in the Taça de Portugal final against S.C. Braga on May 31, 2015, but was substituted in the first half owing to the dismissal of defender Cédric Soares in order to bring on Miguel Lopes; Sporting eventually won in a penalty shootout.

Inter Milan signed Joo Mário for €40 million-plus €5 million in bonuses on August 27, 2016. On 11 September, he made his Serie A debut, playing the entire 90 minutes in a 2–1 success against Delfino Pescara 1936, and his first goal for the squad came in a loss to Cagliari Calcio at home on 16 October.

Joo Mário became increasingly unhappy with the lack of playing time under new boss Luciano Spalletti. On January 25, 2018, he agreed on a loan deal with Premier League club West Ham United, which includes a €1.5 million loan fee and a €40 million buyout option. He made his FA Cup debut two days later, coming on at halftime to replace Pablo Zabaleta in a 0–2 away loss to Wigan Athletic in the fourth round.

On March 31, 2018, Joo Mário scored his first goal for West Ham in a 3–0 win over Southampton. During his half-season at the club, he made 14 competitive appearances, scoring twice, and was commended for his work ethic.

Joo Mário joined Russian club FC Lokomotiv Moscow on a season-long loan on August 27, 2019. He returns to Sporting on loan on October 6, 2020. On the 27th of December, he scored his first goal in his second term, converting a penalty to seal a 2–1 away win over Belenenses SAD. He helped his club win the league for the first time in 19 years by contributing another until the end of the season (from 28 appearances).

Inter stated on July 12, 2021, that they have struck an agreement to mutually end Joo Mário’s contract early.
Joo Mário signed a five-year contract with S.L. Benfica on July 13, 2021. On August 10, he scored his first competitive goal in a 2–0 home victory over FC Spartak Moscow in the UEFA Champions League third qualifying round.

Joo Mário, who is of Angolan heritage, has 82 caps for Portugal at the youth level, including 13 for the under-21 team. He made his senior debut on October 11, 2014, in a friendly against France in Paris, replacing Cristiano Ronaldo for the final 14 minutes; shortly after coming in, he was fouled by Paul Pogba, resulting in a penalty converted by Ricardo Quaresma, in a 1–2 loss.

In 2015, Joo Mário played for Portugal in the UEFA European Under-21 Championship, scoring the only goal in their opening group win over England to become runner-up. He was named to the whole squad for the UEFA Euro 2016 campaign, starting in the team’s first encounter, a 1–1 draw with Iceland in Saint-Étienne, and appearing in all seven of his team’s games, including the final, which they won against France.

On November 10, 2017, Joo Mário scored his first goal for the country, ending a 3–0 friendly defeat against Saudi Arabia. He was later named to the final roster for the 2018 FIFA World Cup.
