John Goodman is an American actor who is popularly known as Dan Conner, a character he played on the ABC TV series Roseanne, which aired from 1988–1997 and then 2018. For that role, he won a Golden Globe Award for Best Actor in 1993.
He has collaborated with American filmmakers, Joel David Coen and Ethan Jesse Coen, popularly known as the Coen brothers, on a couple of other films like Inside Llewyn Davis, O Brother, Where Art Thou?, The Big Lebowski, Barton Fink, and Raising Arizona.
Goodman is also gifted as a voice actor, voicing lots of animated films. In Steven Spielberg’s We’re Back! A Dinosaur’s Story, he voiced Rex, he was Pacha in Disney’s The Emperor’s New Groove. He also featured in Monsters, Inc. and Monsters University as a voice actor.
Brief Bio
Goodman was born in Affton, Missouri on the 20th day of June 1952 to a postal worker Leslie Francis Goodman and his beautiful Virginia Roos. His full name is John Stephen Goodman. John Goodman has English, German and Welsh Ancestry.
He attended Affton High School, from where he graduated in 1970. While in high school, he played football and also did a bit of theatre after which he got a football scholarship to Southwest Missouri State University, Springfield, Missouri (now called Missouri State University). He graduated in 1975 with a Bachelor of Fine Arts.
Career
Goodman started out his career as an athlete but had to move to New York to pursue a career in acting after he sustained an injury that ended his football career. As a newbie in New York, he did all manner of menial jobs to survive including working as a waiter and a bartender as he waited for the tables to turn.
Fortunately for John, he finally landed a modest livelihood doing voice-overs, commercials and plays performing off-Broadway and in dinner theatres, until the early 1980s when he began getting character roles in films.
John has made guest appearances on several late night shows including the Show, (he was the first guest on the show and this earned him the “First Guest Medal”. He hosted the NBC Saturday Night Live so many times. With these experiences but no prior experience in Television Comedy, he auditioned for a cast in Jean Doumanian’s tumultuous 1980–1981 SNL season, alongside other upcoming comedians at the time in the likes of Paul Reubens, Robert Townsend, and but was rejected.
He soon began landing so many roles in films and TV series with notable recognition from prestigious awards.
In 1989 John Goodman received the “American Comedy Award for Funniest Male Performer on TV series”, he received the same award the following year. In 1993, he won the Golden Globe Awards for best performance by an Actor in a TV series. He also won an Emmy Awards for Outstanding Guest Actor in a Drama Series, in 2013, he was inducted as a Disney Legend, In 2017, he received a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame.
Some of his other movie appearances include Alpha House, The Hangover Part III, Patriots Day, 10 Cloverfield Lane, The Babe, The Flintstones, Always, Coyote Ugly, Extremely Loud and Incredibly Close, The Artist, Argo, Flight, among others.

His father died of a heart attack when he was just two-years-old and his mom had to work three jobs to support the family. She worked as a waitress at Jack and Phil’s Bar-B-Que, as an associate in a retail store associate and also did laundry. He has two siblings – a sister named Elizabeth and a brother named Leslie.
Goodman has been married once and it was to Annabeth Hartzog. They got married in 1989 and has remained together ever since, without rumours and scandals. They both have a daughter together Molly Evangeline Goodman, who works as a production assistant in the film industry. The couple lives in New Orleans, Louisiana.
