John Green is a best-selling author, educator, YouTube vlogger, producer and actor. His debut effort as an author Looking for Alaska earned him the 2006 Printz Award. In January 2012, his 6th novel The Fault in Our Stars debuted at number one on The New York Times Best Seller list. Its 2014 movie adaptation nearly toppled the novel in terms of commercial success as it opened at number one at the box office.

In addition to his excellent writing, John Green is also a well-known YouTuber. He launched the YouTube channel “VlogBrothers” alongside his brother Hank Green. The Green brothers have also launched several brilliant projects in the online community including “VidCon”, the largest annual gathering of social media influencers and their fans.

John Green Biography (Age)

He was born as John Michael Green on August 24, 1977, in Indianapolis, the capital city of the U.S. state of Indiana. Barely one month after he was born, his parents Mike and Sydney Green relocated the family to Michigan. They later moved to Birmingham, Alabama before finally settling in Orlando, Florida.

John Green had his early education at Glenridge Middle School and Lake Highland Preparatory School in Orlando, Florida. He completed his elementary education in 1995 at Indian Springs School outside of Birmingham, Alabama. For his college education, he studied English and religious studies at Kenyon College. John completed his college education in 2000.

After his college studies, John Green aspired to become an Episcopal priest. He actually got enrolled at the University of Chicago Divinity School, however, he didn’t go through with the course. He equally served as a student chaplain at Nationwide Children’s Hospital in Columbus, Ohio. There, he encountered a lot of children suffering from severe ailments. Those encounters gave him the inspiration for the book The Fault in Our Stars.

John Green also worked for the Chicago-based book review journal Booklist. He was tasked with the review of numerous works of fiction, many of which were centered on Islam or conjoined twins. He also served as a literary critic for The New York Times Book Review. Still in his early forties, John Green has certainly achieved a lot.

His Family – Brother, Wife and Kids

John Green makes up one half of the Green Brothers. The other crucial half refers to his younger brother William Henry “Hank” Green II. Hank Green was born on May 5, 1980, in Birmingham, Alabama. In addition to YouTube vlogging, he is an entrepreneur, musician, educator, producer and a writer. On January 1, 2007, the Green Brothers created the YouTube channel titled “Vlogbrothers”.

The Green brothers remain the hosts of the channel which has amassed well over 3 million subscribers and counting. John’s wife Sarah Green is also featured in their YouTube videos, however, she doesn’t appear on camera. The Green brothers are also the initiators of the popular online video conference “Vidcon” which has been held every year since the first edition in 2010.

In 2011, the Green brothers collaborated on another YouTube channel titled “Crash Course”. This second channel is an educational-based channel targeted at teaching different courses to the viewers ranging from humanities to science. The Green brothers’ “Crash Course” YouTube channel has garnered over 7.5 million subscribers, much more than their first channel. The Brothers also have a number of other projects to their name including Project for Awesome (P4A), a charity movement and a weekly podcast Dear Hank & John.

 

John Green is married to Sarah Urist Green. The couple exchanged marital vows on May 21, 2006. According to Green, he is an Episcopalian Christian, however, he had his wedding in a Catholic church. Sarah Urist Green was born in Washington, D.C. She studied at Northwestern University after which she obtained a master’s degree in art history from Columbia University. She is an art museum curator and the host of the PBS web series The Art Assignment. From 2007 to 2013, she served as the Curator of Contemporary Art at the Indianapolis Museum.

The couple has two children together. On January 20, 2010, they welcomed their first child, a son named Henry. On June 3, 2013, the couple welcomed their second child, a daughter named Alice. John Green suffers from Obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD). He is very vocal about his struggles with the condition, especially on YouTube.
