John Lithgow’s Biography

John Lithgow was born on October 19, 1945, in Rochester, New York to former actress Sarah Jane and Arthur Washington Lithgow III, who managed the McCarter Theatre located at Princeton, New Jersey. He is said to have lived in different cities during his childhood days and teenage years as a result of his dad’s job that kept them on the road.

Although no details are available about his early education, Lithgow is known to have gone to Harvard College where he earned an A.B. magna cum laude in history and literature upon his graduation in 1967. He revealed that he made up his mind to be an actor after watching Gilbert and Sullivan’s Utopia, Limited during his days in Harvard. Upon graduating from college, Lithgow earned a scholarship to further his education in entertainment at the London Academy of Music and Dramatic Art and worked briefly as Pacifica radio station, New York City as the Director of the Arts and Literature Department.
