Of German, French, English, and Italian origin, Johnathon Schaech was born on the 10th day of September 1969. Schaech was raised a Roman Catholic in Edgewood, Maryland. He stumbled into acting while studying economics at the University of Maryland, Baltimore (UMBC). He took one acting class which proved to be a step in the right direction as he would later foster a career in acting in the long run. While in school, he also belonged to the Lambda Chi Alpha fraternity.

Schaech was born to Joe, a Baltimore City law enforcement officer, and Joanne Schaech, a human resources executive. He has a sister named Renée. Following his education, he sought for the big life and pursued his desire for stardom. He heeded his father’s advice to aim higher, ditching Chippendales, a dance troupe who offered him a job and flew him to Los Angeles in 1989, to sign with Wilhelmina West. For the next three years, he did commercials and received some minor parts in movies and at the same time, he also studied acting until 1993.

Some of his early acting projects include How to Make an American Quilt (1995), ‘s directorial debut That Thing You Do! (1996), the Australian comedy, Welcome to Woop Woop (1997), Hush (1998), Houdini (1998) where he played the titular character and Woundings (1998) as a British military man. For his role in the latter film, Schaech won the Best Supporting Actor at the 2001 New York International Independent Film & Video Festival.
