Singer, songwriter, actor and reality TV star Johnny Gill has indeed proven to be a man of diverse talents. He started out as a solo artist and later rose to music stardom as a member of the R&B/pop group New Edition. Gill resumed his solo career following the group’s first hiatus in 1990 but has since reunited with his bandmates.

The music star equally belongs to another 3-man R&B supergroup named LSG and in 2008, he formed another trio Heads of State with some of his New Edition bandmates. Meanwhile, his solo career still remains intact even as he continues to fulfill his duties as a member of the different groups. Johnny Gill’s long-running music career has fetched him 2 Grammy nominations; one with New Edition and one as a solo act.

Johnny Gill’s Biography

Johnny Gill Jr. was born in Washington D.C. on the 22nd day of May 1966. His mother is Annie Mae Gill and his father Johnny Gill Sr. was a minister of the Baptist church. He has 3 brothers Bobby, Jeff and Randy. An early bloomer, Gill is said to have started singing in the church choir as early as age 5. He formed a gospel music group dubbed Little Johnny and “Wings of Faith” alongside his brothers. He had his early education at Kimball Elementary in Seattle, Washington. For high school, he attended Sousa Junior High and Duke Ellington School of the Arts. Owing to the demands of his budding music career, Gill opted for homeschooling to complete his high school education. He equally had plans of pursuing a college degree but music got the best of him.

Having been a singer for almost all his life, Johnny Gill was able to record his first demo at the age of 16. The demo fetched him a recording contract with Cotillion Records, a subsidiary of Atlantic Records, which marked the official beginning of his music career. He dropped his eponymous debut album Johnny Gill in April 1983 and it was fairly successful. Gill collaborated with his longtime friend Stacy Lattisaw on the album Perfect Combination (1984) after which he released his second solo album (1985).

Johnny Gill was recruited in 1987 to join the R&B group “New Edition”. The group was formerly made up of Ricky Bell, Michael Bivins, Bobby Brown, Ronnie DeVoe and Ralph Tresvant. However, Brown was voted out of the group a few years before Gill was brought on. Gill became one of New Edition’s lead vocalists and he was a major contributor in the success of the group’s next album Heart Break (1988).

Gill swiftly resumed his solo career when New Edition entered a hiatus in 1990 and he released 3 highly successful solo albums before the group reunited in 1996. The multi-talented music star formed the 3-man group LSG in 1997 alongside Gerald Levert and Keith Sweat and together, they released 2 successful albums; Levert.Sweat.Gill. (1997) and LSG2 (2003). Gill reunited with all 4 New Edition bandmates in 2004 and they released a full-length album One Love. He has also made progress in his solo career with the release of his 6th and 7th solo albums Still Winning (2011) and Game Changer (2014).

Johnny Gill continues to go on tours as a member of New Edition though the group has not released any new body of music since 2004. New Edition received a star on the Hollywood walk of fame on January 23, 2017.

Getting married might be one of Johnny Gill’s plans for the future but while he is yet to take that major life step, the music star has had some notable relationships over the years. He dated Canadian-born actress back in 2003 and he is said to have also been involved with R&B singer Stacy Lattisaw.

Gill is also said to have hooked up with actress Sherri Shepherd back in 2014 but the fate of that relationship is uncertain. He has also been linked with international model and actress Carissa Rosario in recent times. One thing is certain, this music star is definitely not in lack of dating options.

Beyond his relationships, Johnny Gill also has an offspring. His first son Isaiah was born back in 2006. The music star has opted to keep the identity of his baby mother away from the public but he has revealed that they are both getting on well in their co-parenting duties.
