Jon attended Clay High School in South Bend, Indiana, and was a Cleveland Browns fan while growing up. He graduated from high school in the year 1981 and proceeded to attend Muskingum College in New Concord, Ohio. He transferred to the University of Dayton after one year in Muskingum and at Dayton, he became a three-year letterman and backup quarterback for the Flyers. The year 1985 marked his graduation with a degree in communication but never saw much football playing time with the Flyers.

College Coaching Career

After college, Jon Gruden quickly became more involved with football when he was brought on as graduate assistant coach at the University of Tennessee for the 1985 and 86 footballing seasons. At the expiration of his short stay there, he spent the next two years as a quarterback coach for the Southeast Missouri Stateside before being hired as the offensive assistant tight ends coach for the University of the Pacific in 1989. Again, in 1990, he moved to the San Francisco 49ers as a special assistant to the quarterback coach Mike Holmgren while his move to the University of Pittsburgh as the wide receivers coach marked the end of his college coaching career in 1991.

Professional Coaching Career

Jon was later hired by his former boss, Mike Holmgren who offered the position of his special offensive assistant/wide receiver coach with the Green Bay Packers. He spent three seasons with the side before becoming the offensive coordinator of the Philadelphia Eagles under former Packers assistant coach Ray Rhodes. Jon became the head coach of the Oakland Riders in 1998 after he was chosen by the owner and general manager of the Oakland Raiders, Al Davis.

With the riders, Jon Gruden saw them to three consecutive playoffs in three seasons. The side had their best run of a decade in the year 2000 when they finished 12-4. They reached the AFC Championship but eventually lost 16-3 to Baltimore Ravens who won the Super Bowl.

He joined the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in 2002 and hit the ground running by revamping the team’s offensive strategy in addition to tooling up other aspects of the team that was ailing. His efforts here paid off as the team had a victory in the NFC Championship game and Super Bowl XXXVII.
