Jorja Smith – Bio, Age

Jorja Alice Smith was born to an English mother and a Jamaican father in Walsall, West Midlands on the 11th of June 1997. She had quite an interesting upbringing which helped shape her into the artiste that she is today. Though Peter Smith-her father works as a benefits officer, it is quite interesting to note that he used to be a professional singer who was involved with a neo-soul group known as “2nd Naicha” in his younger days. Her mother, Jolene on the other hand designs pieces of jewelry. In terms of siblings, Jorja is not an only child as she has just one younger sibling named, Luca Smith. More so, she has a famous cousin named Kemar Roofe who is a football player at Leeds United F.C.

Due to her father’s influence, she was encouraged to learn to play musical instruments like the Piano which she became good at by the age of 8. Jorja Smith then earned herself an Aldridge School music scholarship. While there, she studied the art of classical singing and also learned how to play the Oboe. Later on, she sat for her A-level exams in music.  While Jorja Smith was still in school she began uploading videos of cover songs on her YouTube Channel. Fortunately for her, she was spotted and recruited by a talent manager when she was 15 years old. Soon enough, she began making frequent trips to London where she worked with Ed Thomas and Maverick Sabre in various songwriting sessions. After her graduation, she moved to London where she made a living working as a songwriter and barista.

Career Journey

Her first single named “Blue Lights” was released on the SoundCloud platform in January 2016. The song which sample the song “Siren” by Dizzee Rascal got her over 400,000 streams within just a month of its release. In May of 2016, her follow up single, “Where Did I Go” caught the attention famous rapper Drake who named the song as his favorite song of the moment when he was interviewed in July for .

In the same year, Jorja Smith released “Project 11,” her debut four-track EP(extended play). She was subsequently selected as part of 2017 longlist on where she later emerged fourth overall. In February and March 2017, Drake invited her to be a guest on his Boy Meets World Tour. She then collaborated with the ace rapper Storzy to released the single “Let me Down” in January 2018.
