Depending on who you ask, Jose Mourinho can either be described as the greatest tactical coach to have ever walked the planet earth, or the most negative minded manager who finds success by not playing an open game thereby making the beautiful game look so ugly.

Regardless of opinion, the polarizing Manchester United manager is one of the most successful managers in world football who has achieved success in every club he has ever managed.

Early Life and Managerial Career

José Mourinho was born José Mário dos Santos Mourinho Félix on the 26th of January 1963 in Setubal, a suburb of Lisbon, Portugal. He is the son of a former professional footballer, Félix Mourinho, and primary school teacher, Maria Júlia Carrajola dos Santos.

As a child, Mourinho had hopes of following in his father’s footsteps to become a professional footballer. He first joined the Belenenses youth team before joining the senior set-up at Rio Ave in 1980. He spent two years with the northern Portugal club before moving back to Belenenses. However, after struggling to make the cut there, he tried again at Sesimbra and then at Comércio e Indústria before electing to give up on his dreams to rather focus on becoming a coach.

His first line of action was to enroll at the Technical University of Lisbon to study sports science. He further took coaching courses organized by the English and Scottish Football Associations where he caught the attention of former Scotland manager Andy Roxburgh. Mourinho’s first job was as a school coach after which he became the youth team coach at Vitória de Setúbal.

After a while, Mourinho took the position of assistant manager at Estrela da Amadora, before later becoming a scout at Ovarense. He eventually landed what turned out to be his big break as he was employed as an interpreter for English manager Bobby Robson who had just been appointed to the helm at Sporting CP.

José Mourinho and Robson built a close working and friendly relationship that led to them working together at Porto and then Barcelona. During this time, the young Portuguese manager was no longer just an interpreter, but also an assistant coach who was able to plan practice sessions and also help players analyze the opposition while employing tactics.

The two men’s style complimented each other and they achieved great success while working together. Mourinho later parted ways with Robson in 1997 when the latter left Barcelona as the former stayed back to serve under Louis Van Gaal.

By 2000, Mourinho returned home to work under coach Jupp Heynckes at Benfica but later found himself at the helm after just four weeks into the season when the German coach resigned from his position. He spent a few months at the club before resigning his position over contract extension dispute and took the head coach job at União de Leiria.

He spent a year at União de Leiria before being handpicked to manage Porto whom he won a number of trophies with, including two Primeira Liga titles and a UEFA Champions League title. Following that success, Mourinho became somewhat of a journeyman manager, having two stints as Chelsea boss with jobs at Inter Milan, and Real Madrid in between, before joining Manchester United.

José Mourinho Salary

José Mourinho is on top of the pile of the highest earning managers in world football, according to France Football. The Portuguese manager who recently signed a new contract extension with Manchester United, which will see him at the helm at Old Trafford until 2020, with the option of a further year, is said to reportedly receive a yearly salary of €26 million.

Family – Wife, Daughter, Son

Unlike many other people, José Mourinho is lucky to be spending his life with the only woman he ever dated, Matilde Faria, better known as Tami by close friends and relatives. Faria, who was born in Angola but was raised on the Iberian peninsula, spends her time doing humanitarian work and is also an ambassador for the World Food Programme.

Before exchanging vows sometime in 1989, José and Tami have known each other ever since they were teenagers growing up in Setubal, a suburb of Lisbon, Portugal. They reportedly lived a street away from each other and once their parts crossed, they have been inseparable. Together, the couple has two children; a daughter named Matilde, who was born in 1996 and a son named José Mario, Jr. who was born in the year 2000.

The younger Matilde, who is nicknamed Tita, is a growing socialite who is looking to forge a career for herself in the fashion industry. She has in the past been linked to One Direction star, Niall Horan although the pair later confirmed that they were just friends. Jose Mario, Jr. on the other hand, is hoping to be a professional footballer and is currently part of the youth set-up in Fulham Football Club.
