In 2017, Sherdog heralded Jose Aldo as the greatest featherweight the world of mixed martial arts has ever seen. One look at his fighting portfolio, awards, and victories and it is almost impossible to disagree with that assertion. Aldo who is known for his Muay Thai striking and defensive wrestling tactics placed himself in a very important junction of the MMA history when he became the final WEC Featherweight Champion and the first UFC Featherweight Champion at the same time by reason of the UFC/WEC merger.

He has also gone on to win the UFC Featherweight title three times, with one of them happening in an interim capacity. Jose Aldo has featured regularly in the top 10 of different UFC fighter rankings. In 2015, he clinched the top spot as UFC best pound-for-pound fighter. He once had a memorable 18 fight unbeaten streak from November 2005 to December 2015. The 2009 Sherdog Fighter of the Year holds the record for most wins and knockouts in the history of the UFC and WEC Featherweight.

Jose Aldo’s Bio 

Born in Manaus, Brazil on September 9, 1986, José Aldo da Silva Oliveira Junior grew up knowing hardship at a very personal level. The scar on the left side of his face was from an accident he suffered as an infant. He slipped through his older sister’s hands and fell with his face onto a barbecue, which gave him a permanent scar.

Growing up in Brazil, it is not surprising that Jose’s first and only love was football. He wanted to make it as a professional soccer player, however, it seemed life had other plans. He was bullied so much as a kid that he eventually got fed up and decided to learn to defend himself. Aldo started training to learn the native Capoeira fighting style. His focus, however, shifted to Brazilian jiu-jitsu after he had a training session with a jiu-jitsu expert. By the time he was 17, with nothing but the clothes on his back and a resolve to make something of himself in mixed martial arts, he moved to Rio de Janeiro. Here he trained at Nova União with UFC star Renan Barão.

Career

He was still 17 when he made his MMA professional debut against newcomer and fellow Brazilian Mario Bigola on August 10, 2004. He knocked Mario out with a head kick 18 seconds into the first round, winning the fight, and effectively ending Mario’s professional career.

In his second game, the fight had to be ended by doctor stoppage after Jose bloodied Hudson Rocha with a flying knee and a barrage of punches. For his third fight five months on, he subsequently forced Luiz de Paula to tap out at under 2 minutes into the first round.

Throughout 2005, he fought at different organizations gaining brutal victories against the likes of Aritano Barbosa, Anderson Silverio, and England’s Micky Young. His first professional loss came against the skilled Luciano Azevedo. It was also his longest fight yet as the fighters matched each other’s skill and utilized different tactics and tricks to get one over each other. Eventually, Luciano won the game with a rear-naked choke.

This setback, however, resulted in Jose Aldo rebounding with a decade-long winning streak. On May 20, 2006, he had a difficult fight with Thiago Meller who was undefeated at the time. After three grueling rounds, Jose handed Thiago his first professional defeat. He then went on to defeat Shoji Maruyama at the Pancrase 2007 Neo-Blood Tournament Finals, winning by unanimous decision. This was his last fight before he joined World Extreme Cagefighting (WEC) promotion.

Aldo’s debut at the WEC came against Alexandre Franca Nogueira at WEC 34 on June 1, 2008. It was his first victory with the promotion. A year later, at WEC 41, he killed off Cub Swanson with double flying knees. The fight lasted only 8 seconds.

Jose clinched his first title against Mike Brown in November 2009, when he won the WEC Featherweight Championship at WEC 44. His accomplishments saw him named the Fighter of the Year for 2009 by Sherdog and MMA Live. His first WEC decision win came on April 24, 2010, when he absolutely decimated former Champion Urijah Faber in five rounds. A week later, he successfully defended his featherweight title when he knocked out Manvel Gamburyan in the second minute of the second round.

In October 2010, WEC merged with UFC. This meant that all fighters under the WEC promotion were transferred to the UFC’s roster. Jose Aldo who was the WEC Champion at the time was made the inaugural UFC Featherweight Champion. He was given the title belt on November 20, 2010. After missing his first planned title defense against Josh Grispi due to a neck injury, he came back to successfully defend it against Mark Hominick on April 30, 2011.

He continued to beat out every opponent that challenged him for the title. By February 2, 2013, he had defeated Kenny Florian by unanimous decision; Chad Mendes by a first-round KO; and Frankie Edgar by unanimous decision. This saw him set the record as the fighter with the most championship fights.

After a series of injuries, successful title defenses and his third Fight of the Night bonus Award, Jose Aldo’s winning streak came to an end on December 12, 2015, when he faced . The bout lasted only 13 seconds with Conor McGregor knocking him out and taking his title. This was his first loss in over ten years.

McGregor never defended the title and this forced the promotion to return the title to Aldo after McGregor became the UFC Lightweight Champion on November 26, On June 3, 2017, Jose Aldo recorded his third loss in a bout against interim featherweight champion Max Holloway. However, the fight earned him his fourth career Fight of the Night bonus award.

As at June 28, 2018, the Brazilian born fighter has only lost one other bout, a rematch against Max Holloway. This was his fourth defeat in 30 career fights.

Jose Aldo’s Wife and Family

Jose Aldo’s wife has been with him for most of his professional career. Vivianne Perreira can always be spotted at the ringside whenever Jose is facing an opponent. In light of Jose’s more recent failures in the sport, he says that his wife Vivianne remains his biggest supporter.

The couple got married in 2005 and they have a daughter, Joanna, who they brought into the world sometime in 2012.

According to recent records, Jose Aldo weighs in at 66 kg (145 lbs) and stands at a height of 5 feet 7 inches (1.70 m). Also, his arms span a length that gives him a reach of 1.78 m (70 inches). Jose has a chest size of 40 inches; waist size of 30 inches; and biceps of 15.5 inches.
