One Cuban-American professional baseball pitcher who was known to be a joy to watch in the pitch was Jose Fernandez. In his prime, he was the winner of the 2013 National League Rookie of the Year title with the Miami Marlins.

Early Life And Career

Jose Fernandez was born in Santa Clara, Cuba on July 31, 1992. In his teenage years, he migrated to U.S.A with his mother where he attended Braulio Alonso High School in Tampa, Florida. He started playing baseball in his secondary school with so much energy and talent which made him to standout in his team. The vibrant teenager maintained a position in the Florida Class 6A state champions in both his sophomore and senior seasons.

In 2011 he started his Minor League Baseball (MLB) when the Florida Marlins chose him in the 2011 MLB draft. He later made a one start for the Gulf Coast Marlins of the Rookie-level Gulf Coast League and another one start for the Jamestown Jammers of the Class A-Short Season New York–Penn League. The young pitcher started the 2012 baseball season pitching for the Greensboro Grasshoppers of the Class A South Atlantic League (SAL) where he won the SAL pitcher of the week for two-times. He made his Major Baseball League debut in April 2013 against the New York Mets where he broke the record as the 7th pitcher under 21years to make at least 8 strikeouts in his MLB debut since 1916.

Later in 2013, he also played for the Miami Marlins of the National League All-Star team where he made a name for himself as one of the 3 pitchers under 21years for their All-Star debut who have struck out two batters. The pitcher was fondly called ‘Nino’ by his teammates because of the way he played with so much vigor and skills.

The Miami Marlins pitcher was married at age 20 to Alejandra Baleato Marichal in December 2012 at Tampa, Florida. The two were known to be lovebirds in high school however their marriage lasted barely over a year.

Fernandez started dating Maria Arias after his divorce. The pair met at the movies and became a couple shortly after that. Maria soon became pregnant for the pitcher 5months into the relationship and in February 2017, she had a beautiful daughter named Penelope Jo Fernandez.

The Maimi Marlin pitcher’s mother is Maritza Fernandez. She had a close bond with her son and was devasted with the news of his demise. She had attempted with her young son to escape Cuba about four times in search of greener pastures in the States. She recalled in one of their journies that it was Jose who risked his life to save her when she fell into the sea while heading for the States from Cuba.

News of her son’s death came as a blow as she revealed in an interview with People’s magazine. It has been a horrible experience for her and it is still like a dream she wishes she would one day wake up from. The grieving mother has also refuted and dismissed all evidence of her son using cocaine or being under the influence of alcohol during his death. She maintained he was an outstanding player who played without taking drugs.

Maritza said her heart melted during the funeral when she saw the large crowd that came to pay their last respect to her son stating that she had no idea he was loved to this extent.

As a talented player, Jose Fernandez salary was approximately $651,000 yearly. He was also entitled to yearly allowances worth $6,200. At the time of his death, it was recorded that he had earned more than $6 million. He is said to have a present net worth of about $2.8 million.

His mother Maritza and girlfriend Maria Arias were placed in charge of his assets when he died.

 

Jose Fernandez’ Death

The baseball star met his untimely death via a boat accident off Maimi Beach in September 2016. 2 other people also died in the fiasco, Eduardo Rivero and Emilio Jesus Macias. The boat was said to have crashed into a mass of rocks and the impact killed the three men.

Autopsy results, however, revealed Jose Fernandez was overdosed on cocaine and had too much alcohol in his system while driving the boat. His family, however, does not believe the report that he takes such hard drugs nor does he have drinking problems.

The families of the two other men lost in the accident in February 2017 filed a lawsuit against Jose’s estate worth $2million each for the loss of their children via the pitcher’s carelessness.
