Fonte made his complete debut for the first time in a friendly encounter against France after a long wait.

Not only for him but also for the team, his 2011-12 Football League One season with Southampton was the finest. During that season, he scored seven goals and helped Southampton achieve promotion to the second division.
For the 2011-12 season, he was also named to the League One team of the year and Southampton’s player of the year. He went on to play every game for Southampton until 2015, thanks to this performance.

Fonte, who was born in Penafiel and played for Sporting CP from the age of ten to thirteen, completed his football education there. As a senior, he only played for Sporting CP B in the third tier. In 2004, he joined with Salgueiros, but the club was in financial trouble and was liquidated soon after; as a result, he withdrew his contract and moved to Felgueiras in the Segunda Liga.

Fonte made his Primeira Liga debut with Vitória de Setbal in the 2005 off-season, and his performances drew the attention of Benfica, who signed him in January 2006. Paços de Ferreira, a fellow league team, quickly loaned him out.
