He made his senior debut in 2012 after graduating from Valencia’s academy, and he went on to appear in over 250 competitive matches for the club. Gayà made his first complete appearance for the Spanish national team in 2018, at Euro 2020.

Gayà, who was born in Pedreguer, Alicante, Valencian Community, came via Valencia CF’s youth system, where he began his career as a striker, scoring over 60 goals in a single season, before converting to left-back. He made his senior debut with the reserves when he was just 17 years old, playing 21 minutes in a 1–0 away win over Andorra CF in Segunda División B, his sole appearance of the season.
Gayà made his debut appearance with the main squad on October 30, 2012, as he played the full 90 minutes in a 2–0 Copa del Rey round of 32 wins over UE Llagostera. On the 12th of December the following year, he made his UEFA Europa League debut in a 1–1 group stage home tie with FC Kuban Krasnodar.
Gayà made his La Liga debut for the Che on April 27, 2014, starting and playing the entire 90 minutes in a 0–1 loss at home to eventual winners Atlético Madrid. In that year’s Emirates Cup, he scored the first goal in a 3–1 defeat against S.L. Benfica on August 3.
In the 2014–15 season, new manager Nuno Espirito Santo promoted Gayà to the starting lineup. On September 25, 2014, he scored his first goal as a professional and in the Spanish top division, scoring his team’s second goal in a 3–0 home triumph over Córdoba CF. His second occurred on January 7, the following year, in the domestic cup, when he assisted on a 2–1 win over RCD Espanyol, also at the Mestalla Stadium.
Gayà’s contract with the club was prolonged on May 8, 2015, with a €50 million buyout clause, until 2020. He agreed to a new deal until 2023 in May 2018, with his release clause, increased to €100 million. ESPN FC named him to their Champions League Best XI in October after he was part of the team that kept a clean sheet against Manchester United in the group stage of the UEFA Champions League.
During the coronavirus pandemic in Spain in March 2020, Gayà and teammates Ezequiel Garay and Eliaquim Mangala tested positive for COVID-19 virus. The entire squad was placed up for sale in August due to the economic impacts of the pandemic, except for him. He had previously filled in as captain in the absence of Dani Parejo, but after the midfielder was sold to Villarreal CF, he became the regular captain.

Gayà made his UEFA Nations League debut on September 11, 2018, including the whole 6–0 thrashing of Croatia at home. He scored the equalizing goal in the 97th minute of a 1–1 away tie against Germany on September 3, 2020, for the same competition.
Gayà was named to Luis Enrique’s 24-man Euro 2020 squad on May 24, 2021. In the 5–3 extra-time victory over Croatia in Copenhagen, he played 77 minutes for the semi-finalists.
