Professionally known and addressed as Josh Brown, Joshua Clell Brown is a former football placekicker who was drafted in the 2003 NFL Draft and has played for top teams like the Seattle Seahawks, the Cincinnati Bengals, St. Louis Rams, and the New York Giants.

The New York Giants was the last team Josh played for but they had to let him go in October 2015, after he publicly admitted to an abusive relationship with his wife, Molly Brown. Here is all you need to know about the Oklahoma-born former player.

Josh Brown’s Brief Bio

Brown was born in Tulsa, Oklahoma on April 29, 1979. The names of his parents and siblings (if he has any) are not known and he is an alumnus of Foyil High School. Josh began playing football early and that was right after his family moved from Tulsa. He was in eighth-grade at the time. Before going professional, Josh Brown also played college football at Nebraska.

Professional Career

Brown’s professional career began in 2003 after he was drafted 222nd overall by the Seattle Seahawks in the 2003 NFL Draft. Later in October, Josh kicked a 58-yard field goal in the game against the Green Bay Packers, which till date remains the longest and best goal of his career.

In another game against the Green Bay Packers, which was his post-season debut, Brown kicked all three PATs, as well as two field goals. In October 2004, for the first time in his career, he punted a 35-yarder, against the St. Louis Rams.

He remained with the Seahawks until the end of 2007 season. In January 2008, he signed with the St. Louis Rams. The new deal made him the highest paid kicker at the time. While with the Rams, he kicked four field goals, (including the 49-yarder that got them a win in a game against Washington Redskins). He also recorded a 36-yard touchdown pass and a 60-yard field goal.

Unfortunately, his $14.2 million five-year deal with the Rams was cut off in April 2012, as the team prepared to draft Greg Zuerlein in 2012 NFL Draft. He signed with the New York Jets in a deal that lasted from May to August 2012.

In December, Cincinnati Bengals signed him on to replace Mike Nugent, who suffered an injury at the time. Beating Billy Cundiff and Neil Rackers to the job, on December 23, Josh Brown kicked a game-winning field goal in a game against Pittsburgh Steelers to hand Bengals their first back-to-back playoff berths in almost 3 decades.

The next season, he signed with the New York Giants and went on to record 23-of-26 in field goals and 31-of-31 in extra points in his first season with the team. As the season was winding up, he recorded a 45-yarder in a game against the Detroit Lions and a career-high five field goals in the game against the Philadelphia Eagles.

In 2014, Brown signed a two-year contract with the Giants that was worth $2.6 million and that season, he recorded a 24-of-26 in field goals, converting all 44 of his extra points. He became a free agent in 2015 after his deal with the Giants expired and in April 2016, it was announced that Josh re-signed with the Giants in a two-year deal worth $4 million. In August, however, he received a one-game suspension from NFL on allegations of violating the league’s conduct policy.

In October, documents were released by the Washington Sheriff’s Office in which Josh Brown admitted to have verbally and physically abused his then-wife, Molly Brown. After the documents came out, co-founder of the Giants, John Mara stated that Brown was only re-signed even after he admitted to abusing his wife in the past.

Following several criticisms, the next day, the NFL had to place Brown on the commissioner’s exempt list as it further reviewed the documents and the Giants benched Josh Brown for their Week 7 game against the Los Angeles Rams in London, promising to re-visit his case after the game.

The Giants had to release Brown on October 25, 2016. The Giants in a statement on the said day apologized for their “misguided” approach to the case. They added that he was free to sign with any other team and will be placed back on the exempt list pending the NFL’s investigation.

In 2017, he was handed an additional six games ban as a free agent after the NFL continued investigation about previous domestic violence case. The suspension is now over and Brown is again free to sign with an NFL team, unfortunately, no team has signed him yet.

The former NFL star was married to Molly Brown from 2008 to 2016. The couple had to separate in 2015 following allegations from Molly who accused her husband of physically assaulting her more than 20 times.

She said that Josh became abusive after she became pregnant with their daughter. She reported the case for the first time in May 2013 after she claimed her husband had grabbed her wrist during an argument.

On arrival, the police found evidence of domestic violence assault and arrested him. Five days later, the charges were dropped. Josh admitted to abusing his wife, though he insisted it was not physical.

Their divorce was finalized in December 2016. Brown was ordered to pay $15,000 per month in spousal support to Molly for 24 months and $4,000 per month in child support. Molly got custody of their daughter and Josh gets to visit.
