Brekalo is a Dinamo Zagreb youth player. On December 19, 2015, he made his league debut against Inter Zaprei. On May 15, 2016, he agreed to terms with Bundesliga club VfL Wolfsburg for a fee of €10 million.

Brekalo was loaned to VfB Stuttgart until the end of the season on January 31, 2017, with an option for another year.
