The former Old Dominion University baseball player, who broke and set numerous school and divisional records, has also represented the United States at international competitions. Verlander is known for his four pitching styles; a hard four-seam fastball, a slider, a 12-6 curveball, and a changeup, which has all brought him huge success and cemented his legendary status.

Biography

On the 20th of February 1983, in Manakin-Sabot, Virginia, Kathy and Richard Verlander welcomed the first of their two sons, Justin Brooks Verlander. While growing up, Verlander had a very close bond with his father who was a big baseball enthusiast. As the story goes, his father was the one who encouraged him to play the game after he witnessed his son demonstrate his strong arm by throwing a rock further than he could.

By the time Verlander was 9, he began playing baseball at the youth level and was reported to be the best pitcher in the Richmond area. He attended Goochland High School where in his senior year he recorded 144 strikes in 72 innings with 0.38 ERA. Verlander and his family had hoped that a baseball team will come for him at this point but that was not the case and the young boy had no option but to go to college.

Justin Verlander had the option of playing college baseball for Duke on scholarship but he, opted to stay close to home and attend Old Dominion University in Norfolk, Virginia. Here, Verlander made sure he enshrined his name into the school and the Colonial Athletic Association’s record books as he became the all-time strikeout leader in both the school and division’s history. His performances then garnered him a selection to the United States national team that won silver at the 2003 Pan American Games.

After three years at Old Dominion where in his final year he was named the ODU Alumni Association’s Male Athlete of the Year, Justin Verlander was selected by the Detroit Tigers with the second overall pick in the 2004 MLB Draft. He went on to play for two of Detroit minor league teams: the Lakeland Flying Tigers and the Erie SeaWolves before going on to make his Major League debut on July 4, 2005.

Net Worth

Justin Verlander has a net worth estimated to be around $105 million. The pitcher was able to amass his massive wealth through his salary over the years in the majors and from endorsement deals.

In 2013, Verlander put pen to paper on what was at the time the biggest deal ever handed to a pitcher, a seven-year contract worth $180 million. During that time, the six-time Major League Baseball All-Star also signed lucrative endorsement deals with companies like Under Armour, GlaxoSmithKline, Breitling, and Rawlings.
