Dennis comes from a family with deep roots in American politics; her parents are Luke Dennis and his wife Allison Dennis. Kathryn’s grandfather was a well-known senator who spent up to fifty years of his life in the South Carolina parliament. Additionally, she is a descendant of John Calhoun who served as the 7th Vice president of the United States under President Quincey Adams during the 19th century.

Kathryn grew up in her family’s plantation in Berkeley County and while she was growing, she was regarded as the party-girl of the family. She often lives an extravagant life and  parties hard with her friends. Meanwhile, she has a history of alcohol abuse which had landed her in the rehab many times. She had her first child with her co-star and boyfriend Thomas Ravenell in the first season of the series in 2014. Thomas is an American politician who served as the former treasurer of South Carolina for six months from January to July 2007 under governor Mark Sanford.

Kathryn and Thomas were together in 2014 when she got pregnant. But the pregnancy stirred a lot of controversy in the Southern Charm crew as she was confused about who the father of her child was between her co-stars Thomas Ravenell and Shep Rose. However, it was later discovered that it was Ravenell who had fathered her child. The couple welcomed their first child, a daughter named Kensington Ravenell in 2014. The following year, they also had a son named Saint Julien Ravenell after which they officially went their separate ways. They broke up due to irreconcilable differences.

Prior to their relationship, Ravenell was previously married to Mary Ryan, the daughter of former Chief of Air Force General Mike Ryan. The duo was together for two years and got divorced in 2008.

Drug Problems

Following her break up with Thomas Ravenell, Kathryn lost custody of their children as Thomas got the full custody after the kids were returned to him by their nanny who alleged that Kathryn had been using party drugs around them. Kathryn was placed on rehab for excessive drug usage in late 2015. When she had fully recovered, she began to fight for joint custody of their children in 2016. After she failed the court’s drug test and tested positive for marijuana and cocaine, it was ruled that Thomas will retain sole custody of the children.

Meanwhile, that was not the first time Kathryn had experienced such legal confrontation. She was previously arrested and was sentenced to Berkeley jail for excessive drinking and misconduct in 2012.
